Would you put suncream on a strangers back?

UpUpUpU · 11/08/2024 18:11

Just that!

I am doing an open water swim tomorrow. The forecast here is 32 and sunshine. I will do my best to suncream my back but the reality is I’ll be swimming for around 2 hours with my back exposed.

it’s a proper swimming venue, very friendly etc. Will it be completely weird to ask a stranger to out sun cream in me?! I would do it for someone else but don’t want to assume and look a complete idiot!

Or if anyone has any suggestions to get my whole back covered, I’d be grateful!

Thank you in advance.

Yes, I'd happily do it for anyone & have anyone do it for me. It's your back not your flaps!!

have fun with the swim!! I wish I was going somewhere to swim tomorrow!!

StuckOnTheCeiling · 11/08/2024 19:01

Random bloke at the beach, probably not.

In the situation you describe, yes sounds fine.

I wouldn’t risk putting it on before leaving, too much chance of some being rubbed off by clothes.

fluffi · 11/08/2024 19:05

No. But I can put my own suncream on my back.

I guess someone else might be struggling and you can help each other.

Ow community are kind and apply sun cream to each other.

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/08/2024 19:08

I'd just use a spray

Fantosia · 11/08/2024 19:10

Yuck. Hate touching others skin. Wouldn't wish to apply on my husband yet alone a stranger. Absolute no from me. Buy a spray!

UpUpUpU · 11/08/2024 19:21

I will be alone at home and at the venue so nobody to put it on. No spray and I won’t have time to get one on the way. Think I’ll just do my best and hope I don’t burn!

I would yes of course. If I were asking I'd probably try to ask someone of similar age to me. X

MonsteraMama · 11/08/2024 19:25

Yes of course, I'd happily slather someone in it if they asked!

I use a false tan application doodad to put mine on when there's no one friendly looking about though!

CMOTDibbler · 11/08/2024 19:26

On another woman at an OW event, absolutely. But then I'm an OW swimmer and esp through the winter we stuff each other in wetsuits and get changed in close proximity very quickly, so less worries really

MinnieDog · 11/08/2024 20:50

100% would do another woman at an open water swim. But if you feel awkward, ask when theres at least 2 women standing together- "would any/either of you mind popping this on me? I didn't have anyone to do it at home" then you don't feel awkward if you've asked a single person and they say no!

Wrongsideofpennines · 11/08/2024 20:59

At this kind of event someone absolutely will help you if you ask.

There was a bit event in Hull a few years back where hundreds of people got naked and painted blue for a photography thing, apparently it was all a bit weird at first but then they basically had to start painting each other's arses blue as they couldn't all reach.

Cakencookieobsessed · 11/08/2024 21:02

No, I don't like getting up close and personal to strangers so I can't imagine I'd want to rub cream into a random. You just don't know if others are clean or not.

MadameMassiveSalad · 11/08/2024 21:07

Why not wear a swim top?

Ineffable23 · 11/08/2024 21:07

Well you might as well ask? The worst that happens is they say no and you're in the same position as you are currently.

The worst that happens if you don't ask is you burn unnecessarily.

AppleKatie · 11/08/2024 21:07

I’m sure someone will do it for you at an event like this.

that said, in a two hour swim it is going to all soak off. And for that reason I would wear a rash vest.

MadameMassiveSalad · 11/08/2024 21:07

Fedup369 · 11/08/2024 18:20

Yes (but if secretly hate it) but to increase your chances of a yes I'd get a spray that dosnt need rubbed in, no need for someone to touch you then, I would hate to touch someone I don't know, not because of germs but because it's a bit intimate and awkward IMO

Good idea!

SD1978 · 11/08/2024 21:19

I would do it if asked. If you don't have anyone with you, it's a perfectly reasonable request. Don't over think it. I'm sure you'll be told on here it's weird, as a solo traveller, swimmer myself, I really don't think it is

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 11/08/2024 22:52

Did just this on the beach a couple of weeks ago. Random couple came over, asked if they could use my sun cream as they'd forgotten theirs. I said of course and asked if they'd put some on my back (the small area between my shoulder blades that I just cannot reach!). No problem, no awkwardness. The whole event took a couple of seconds and it wasn't like I was ever going to see them again!

PurpleChrayn · 11/08/2024 23:06

I would for another woman. Not for a man. I don't touch men outside of my immediate family for religious/cultural reasons.

OooohAhhhh · 11/08/2024 23:12

Yes of course.
I was on holiday recently and a seagull shit down my back on the beach. A stranger came up me and wiped it off because I didn't have any baby wipes on me.
Teamwork 👏

OfficerChurlish · 11/08/2024 23:15

I travel solo a bit and have been asked; and have had a stranger do it for me. It doesn't bother me but I absolutely can see how some people would not like to touch or be touched by a stranger. Another way to do it is to hold up your sunscreen and ask if anyone would mind helping you. Almost certainly someone will volunteer (although it might be a hairy bloke - you could phrase it something like "would any of you ladies mind...")

Stickthatupyourdojo · 11/08/2024 18:32

I'd ask a stranger to use the aerosol one that doesn't need rubbing in, just spray it on. I buy the Aldi factor 50 one, it's great when I take my children's friends out with us as I can top them up without having to really touch them.

I use this, it's great!!!

Bearpawk · 12/08/2024 03:09

Honestly in that heat/ sun I'd be wearing a uv rash vest. Even the most waterproof of sun creams will not stay on in the water for very long

Sweetteaplease · 12/08/2024 03:12

Only if they had nice skin
