Where in York to live?

Hi
We are living in London but thinking of moving to York in a few years. We have in laws living in Huby and brother in law in huttons ambro but we would be looking to live in York. We have a daughter who’s 6 at the moment so most likely to move either when she starts year 3 (2025) or wait till year 7 (2029). We are strongly looking at independent schools as she currently attends an independent school now. I work full time and fully remote, my husband can change jobs to be fully remote or commune to London 1 or 2 days a week. We would have a budget of 700k for a 4 bed detached house. Which part of York would be nice and close to independent schools? We want to be in York within walking distance to shops, parks, or at least near it, and getting food deliveries etc. I see bootham and St. Peter’s near Clifton. We haven’t looked at schools yet but wanted to get an idea in where to base ourselves first. We’re happy to get on the bus for the school run as I know traffic can be bad and parking isn’t always available ( any advice on the school run would be great) Any advice on houses and/or schools, good or bad please let me know. Thanks

Holgate, Bishopthorpe, Dringhouses are all areas close to The Mount School, which is definitely worth a look at if you're not interested in Saturday school.

York Stage School is fantastic for acting, singing, dance and musical theatre!

Thanks @Mumofteenandtween i had no idea about this Saturday school. It really has put me off now, I was going to register for the open day in October but Saturday school, even if it’s just half the day? Hmm the whole point of moving was to be closer to family I.e weekends seeing them but having Saturday school isn’t something my daughter would be keen on, also I know she’ll want to do dancing/Stagecoach/ swimming etc.

You don’t need to choose an independent school to get an amazing education in York … check out Fulford School and Archbishop Holgates ….

Meggy123 · 12/08/2024 09:36

That was one of the other reasons we chose Cundall as we didn't want to commit to Saturday school. We both have full time jobs so like spending the weekends with our kids. I think Leeds Grammar don't do Saturdays? Not sure about the others.

UnimaginableWindBird · 12/08/2024 11:08

If you don't want Saturday school, it's definitely worth looking at the state schools - York has several excellent state schools with houses with a garden within walking distance of the city centre within your budget, and there are lots of excellent evening and weekend options for extracurricular activities.

sadams123 · 12/08/2024 13:45

Thanks everyone we will look in those options including stage coach my daughter loves singing and dancing

Your budget of 700k is unlikely to get you a 4 bedroom detached near to St Peter’s or Bootham.
Not in a nice area (avoid Clifton Green and Acomb).
Would you be open to semi detached or a townhouse? Although even townhouses on Bootham go for around 1.6 million.
My DD goes to St Peter’s and she’s really happy. Thanks to the VAT policy, they don’t have a waiting list for the first time ever.

MummyJ12 · 12/08/2024 14:06

The options available that would be available to you are here (if you were to move now).
Dringhouses and Huntington could be options. Both are 2 miles out of the city centre.
Ignore the first one for 700k in Huntington. It’s near the A1237 and they’re probably selling because of the proposed dualling of the ring road.

This is what’s available in the city centre for your budget at the moment. (No detached I’m afraid).

If you have girls then The Mount school does not have Saturday school at all and leaves the weekend to pursue out of school interests. Definitely worth a look.

What’s wrong with Acomb. Plenty of nice ordinary people live there.

MummyJ12 · 12/08/2024 15:19

I’m sure they do and I’m sure it’s lovely in Acomb @Leniriefenstahl. The crime rate is higher is some parts is all.

Leniriefenstahl · 12/08/2024 15:24

Chances are the crime rate isn’t like in the bronx @MummyJ12 nowhere in York is. Absence of artisan bakeries may be an issue as OP is moving from London (as are most folk moving up here nowadays). Bishy road probs a better fit.
You should try Acomb, it won’t bite 😂

MummyJ12 · 12/08/2024 15:33

Acomb does have the Bluebird Bakery which is lovely. Crime rates are higher in Acomb, Foxwood and Tang Hall than other areas in York. It’s a sad but true fact. My friend lives in Foxwood and she loves it though and coming from London, none of the areas in York will have anywhere near the crime rate of even the nicest London Borough!
There’s no way the OP will get detached on Bishy Rd. Not even a townhouse for 700k.

MummyJ12 · 12/08/2024 15:59

Some more information here.
This YouTube video further backs up my view, it ranks Chapelfields, Acomb one of the worst places to live in York. (Foxwood in number two spot, Clifton number one). Hope the link works!

Although in the past year, Westfield, Acomb has the highest crime rate.

Thanks all. I’ve looked in Rightmove and seen 700k detached in dringhouses
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/149651948
although reduced to 700.
this one 725
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/148662524
houses near St. Peter’s look cheaper around 459-500 but smaller? We currently live in a semi so a detached would be our next house and forever home as we wouldn’t be moving after this ( unless we get old lol ) I don’t mind a bit of updating but nothing major projects
Will consider those other areas I’m open minded

Both properties are in Dringhouses which I think would be a great option for you. 1.6 miles to the City Walls then just a bit further down Micklegate into the city centre which is easily walkable. Close to the Knavesmire too (the racecourse). You have Tescos Extra on Tadcaster Road nearby too.
If you didn’t want to pay for Independent and your children are baptised (Catholic) All Saints is a great secondary school which is nearby.

LunaNorth · 12/08/2024 18:03

Pocklington School don’t do Saturdays anymore, and Pocklington itself is a lovely place to live.
