My FIL retiredc to carvoiero in the algarve and it's lovely there. Great weather, nice beaches, decent roads to drive on, and good shopping facilities in portimao too.

Kneeslikethese · 11/08/2024 16:42

Fuerteventura.

SweetChilliGirl · 11/08/2024 16:47

I'd go for Burgundy.

But I'd I had a spare 700k, I wouldn't buy a villa. Going back to the same spot again and again doesn't appeal at all. I'd go travelling for extended periods to remote and interesting parts of the world 🌎

South of France. Easy to reach, good food, good weather and I can speak the language enough to get by.

Mykittensmittens · 11/08/2024 16:49

Madeira is lovely. Or northern Spain - Costa brava, somewhere within striking distance of Gerona airport. Short flights and a beautiful coast.

LadyWiddiothethird · 11/08/2024 16:50

Cyprus.

We are very lucky to have done a lot of travelling around the world. We've lived overseas for periods and my DH grew up abroad, so I think we don't really have the travel bug anymore. I've got one place left on my travel list (Japan) but that's it tbh.

We're looking for somewhere we can easily hop on a plane to as soon as the school holidays roll around and then chill out by the pool. Somewhere the kids can maybe learn another language.

Between family and friends, there would probably be someone using it once a month in terms of frequency.

Mojácar ( Almería ) Spain, stunning beaches, short flight with 2/3 airports nearby (Almería, Murcia or but further out Alicante)

ginasevern · 11/08/2024 17:08

Somewhere around the Naples region (Italy) but I don't think £700,000 would get me much more than an apartment.

A part of me agrees but we didn't pay anything like £700k in 2004 and it's worth more than that now. It was also a compromise because DH doesn't have the travel bug and likes familiar places and speaks French

I argued to go to France in 2003 and he was hard to persuade. He fell in love and when we got home bought the very tired and run down villa we stayed in because it was for sale.

I wouldn’t do it now post brexit as we can't spend the time there we had planned originally without a painful tax sting.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/08/2024 17:12

I'd buy a ski chalet with a hot tub rather than a pool.

Iamthemoom · 11/08/2024 17:13

Somewhere Central down to Southern Italy in one of the really un-touristy regions like Abruzzo where 700k would buy you a palace with plenty of change to do it up the way you like and enjoy it without crowds of tourists. And the food is the best ever. And for the cynical posters, having someone maintain it for you when you're not there won't cost the earth either!

There I disagree. Family and friends are frankly a pain in the arse who want mates rates or in the case of family, no rates, in peak season and get grumpy if they hear the word no. We put our foot down very hard after the first 18 months and made it crystal clear that if family members (except our parents) wanted holidays, they could be booked via our agent. The requests soon stopped - cousins and dh's aunts/uncles. No siblings.

Am I boring if I say Devon? Somewhere near Dartmouth would suit me :-)

I’d say Devon too! Only couple hours drive from us and my favourite U.K. holiday destination

readingismycardio · 11/08/2024 17:19

Spain, south France, south Italy

butmumineedit · 11/08/2024 17:21

Fuerteventura.

coxesorangepippin · 11/08/2024 17:22

Being on the mainland would be a big incentive for me

Also, how stable is Greek financially?

I'd pick Spain or France personally

BobandRobertaSmith · 11/08/2024 17:22

Cascais or somewhere near Lisbon so you have the option of city breaks too.

We wouldn't be charging friends & family to stay anyway, so not a problem there. We don't need to make money from it so won't be letting it out.

Also they are happy to go outside of school times so no problem there either tbh.

I'm happy to say no if needed. We've had a holiday cottage in the UK before and it's not been a problem managing expectations.

Well I would definitely not suggest Mexixo, especially I'd you have cheeky neighbours!
