My husband has suffered with migraines/ headaches for a good few years now, je tends to get them for days at at time (they come and go during the day) but these episodes can lest a few days/ weeks on and of

He has been to see a doctor many times , they once diagnosed him with 'cluster headaches '

We can't really find anything that triggers them, although he has had a very stressful week

My children and I all had a sickness bug this week, he didn't but unsure of the headache may still be linked

He has has an on of headache again for a few days, paracetamol doesn't help but the red nurofen capsules do

Does this sound like a normal migraine / headache?

We flew back from holiday 9 days ago, so unsure if it's something to do with the pressure?

He able to get on with daily activities, but can feel it there constantly niggling

I also don't think the heat is helping, and also lack of sleep (from children ) and maybe over tired from getting up so early for work aftee having over 2 weeks of

This sounds similar to mine, I have varying types but often ibuprofen is best. I also find a combination of full fat coke, water with electrolytes and bananas help.

I drink water with electrolytes first thing every day, and since I've been doing that, the regular 'headaches' have stopped (apart from when we're due a thunderstorm, like lately!). That being said, I still get the odd migraine where nothing but sumatriptan, a dark quiet room, and sleep will help.

He should see the GP and get a prescription for a triptan. There's no need to suffer with migraines. Stress is a big factor in migraine. When I'm stressed I get migraine after migraine and feels as though they're never fulling going although sumatriptan really helps with the pain.

@ginoclocksomewhere thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear you suffer the same!!

Thank you for the advise given!

He is currently lying upstairs sleeping, hoping this will ease it a bit for him!

@NigelHarmansNewWife thank you for your reply!

I think I may contact the doctors for him tomorrow if no improvement, I definitely think stress has been a contributing factor !

Cluster headaches are horrendous - one of the worst types of pain people can experience. They tend to come in bouts of days or weeks at a time, and one usually obvious difference between migraines and cluster headaches is that people with migraines want a dark room and no noise (mostly), cluster headache sufferers generally keep moving, bang head against the wall etc. and generally over the counter pain relief won't touch cluster headaches. Injections or triptans are effective though.

Taking a magnesium supplement is one medication free way of cluster headache prevention. It's only from recent research but it showed that a large percentage of sufferers stopped getting them completely. A quick solution when they start is to drink red bull. It is miraculous! Coffee can also help but not to the same extend.

@ForKeenLimeOtter thank you for your reply

I do actually have magnesium (I take it myself) so I will start getting him to take this as well!

I ended up ringing 111 this morning as he's in a bad way 😢

Managed to get him an appointment at 8am!

I am such a worrier and always over think!

He's had episodes like this many times, but I always worry way to much!

Hopefully they can give him somethings stronger as everything he's been takkkg isn't helping much

He has been prescribed naproxen before, which has previously helped , but isn't this time

Good luck with the appointment. I'm getting more general heads he's and think I overheat/lack of sleep.

His soundworse though.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 12/08/2024 07:35

As above - I get "regular" migraines and also what sounds similar to what your husband is having. For me, a triptan deals with both (though for the cluster type often takes 2 doses, and it can come back).

I hope he is feeling better soon.

Flippers1956 · 12/08/2024 07:48

@Needapadlockonmyfridge thank you

Do you find you wake up with a headache?

He was in quite a lot of pain this morning, I gave him some dispersable asprin this morning, which he said has taken the edge of

He also finds, if je tried to keep 'busy' it doesn't seem as bad, but when he's sitting down doing nothing it's worse, I think it's because he's thinking about it and psychologically making it worse if that makes sense?

Hoping in today's heat it will be manageable with (hopefully) new medication

Yes my headaches always last a few days, but I think it's because they're hormone related.

Lifeinlists · 12/08/2024 08:41

If he's affected so regularly it might be worth seeing a neurologist - preferably one that specialises in headaches - for proper diagnosis. Also, if it is migraine then the Migraine Trust is a good source of information and advice, including a helpline

Thank you all for your replies

The doctor said it seemed more like a tension headache possibly from sleep pattern change and stress

He also had slightly high blood pressure which has possible contributed to the headache as well

I hope your DH is feeling better.

Flippers1956 · 13/08/2024 20:25

@Needapadlockonmyfridge thank you, he is still suffering with the headaches, we have been checking his BP as that's what the doctor advised on Monday as it was hight when she took it

All the readings have been pretty high, so I think this may be a big contributing factor to his headaches
