Dad moved abroad 10+ years ago wants my address for pension

My dad lives abroad and is pestering me to renew his Uk drivers licence so he can claim his UK pension. I guess he needs UK ID and he will use my address for this. He's not lived here for about 12/13 years and he's visited twice (due to my personal circumstances). It expired so long ago I'm not sure if I can even renew it I'll need to go and look. But does all this sound dodgy?
Thanks.

@Ihadenough22
I sent him what you said. Thank you. I recon his drivers license will drop through my letterbox and I'll need to decide what to do with it. He's back tracking now saying he doesn't actually need his drivers license and can use his Chinese one here. So why dues he want it then? I don't trust him. Quite sad because I don't have any other family and no one for help and no one to talk to about these things. X

Tell him it's completely illegal to have two driving licences.

Glad you sorted it op

Your father will most likely need an eye test and when he reaches 70 a medical test is required every three years. Both must be carried out in UK.

I'd make it very clear in an email or by text that he cannot use your address and keep copies/screen shot.

If you are concerned about having no family would you contact your aunt? She might be missing you.

Chinese people use VPN to get around the system, he can do this himself or ask a Chinese friend to apply.

i dont recall dh having anything for his 70th, no eye test

Willmafrockfit · 11/08/2024 20:42

no medical test at all,
perhaps at 75?
just a photo
gp's do not have capacity for this time of request

I can confirm there is no medical test at 70, or any time later. At 70 to renew your licence, you just have to answer a series of questions on your eyesight and health. You will then have to renew in the same way every 3 years after. You have to sign the form but quite frankly it would be so easy to lie or believe your eyesight/health is better than it is. I did make a point of going outside and checking that I could read a number plate within the required distance. I think there should be some sort of medical examination. To save putting the strain on the NHS it could be organised by your insurance company.

amicissimma · 11/08/2024 21:22

His pension depends on the National Insurance contributions he has made here over the years. The government need his NI number to check this. If he is entitled to a UK pension, he will be entitled to it if he lives in China.

It is normally paid into the claimant's bank account. Does he have a UK account and can he access funds in it?

They tend to communicate by post. Presumably to check that the claimant does indeed live at that address. You simply need to return everything you receive addressed to him with 'not at this address' written on it. He will not know that you have done this. If he asks if you have received his post just say that you don't have anything for him. (True, you won't have if you've sent it back.)

Don't commit fraud on someone else's behalf, not even your father's. You will receive no benefit from it and will bear all the appreciable risk. Well, actually better not to commit fraud on your own behalf, either, but that's not the point of this thread!

@chocolateandsprinkles I'm really sorry that you don't have any family to lean on and support you, it must be incredibly tough.
Stay strong for you 🌻

What absolute nonsense!
