What indoor toys does your little one like? Suggestions please!

I want to get some new toys for when my granddaughter visits. I think she's grown out of most of the things I've got here (they'll do very nicely for her little brother soon though!) I don't want garden stuff, I'm looking for stuff to do inside.

She's almost 3, and very shy. Good fine motor skills. She likes jigsaws, matching cards, building towers, books - but she won't look at a book her own and my voice wears out after reading several on the trot! (She has a Yoto and I record onto a card for that but I'd like more active stuff for her too). She LOVES "helping" in the kitchen but of course that's really rather limited! Not so much into drawing/painting and she's gone off duplo.

She's got a toy which is like a large pretend padlock with storage inside, she loves locking and unlocking it and putting "treasures" in, then bringing them to me as a "present"; that seems far more interesting to her than just putting things in a bag. She's also got a giant measuring tape which pulls out from the nose of an elephant toy then winds back in with a ratchety click - that's popular too. She also loves making endless "cups of coffee" (complete with swooshing sound effects!) with a wooden model coffee machine.

She did really like being a bear, or a dragon, and hiding in/emerging from her Dark Bear Cave (ie a large cardboard box!) but she seems to be leaving that idea behind.

I don't want to get anything that realistically needs to be left out as she's not here every day and I like my house back inbetween visits! I've got a dolls house in the attic and lots of Playmobil furniture etc for it but I think she's just a little bit too young for that still - maybe for xmas. I would prefer to avoid buying lots of new plastic stuff.

Any ideas what else I could get her? I'm so out of touch with toys!

A mini kitchen? You might find one second hand.

Tool kit. Medical box.

Fisher price garages / school house / farm stc

A dressing up box - get a trunk and make it up yourself

A play tent - easy to take down.

(Suggesting all these like she likes imaginative play)

Puzzles and felt picture kits, easel and painting kit.

There’s a book called you choose that is often popular on their own

Magnatiles
building blocks
books
aqualand /sandpit for outside

DrivingMePotty123 · 09/08/2024 22:16

You sound like a lovely Grandma.

She seems to enjoy imaginative/role play, so maybe some pretend toys like a tea set or baking set. My little girl (just turned 3) loves playing with a wooden birthday cake.

As she likes her toy padlock, she may really enjoy a latch board too.

You could do (supervised) play with real tools like knocking golf tees into a potato with a hammer.

How about nature exploring, you could take a magnifying glass along with you. A proper one, not a silly plastic one. Look out your childhood Shell book of the british countryside * and take it along.

Lacing/threading beads onto elastic thread (or pasta instead of beads)

*other publications will be ok

Definitely magnatiles or a toy kitchen supplies (don't think you actually need a kitchen, she can do plenty without).

scoobiedew · 09/08/2024 22:24

Playmobil figures or Sylvanian Family characters

NotMeNoNo · 09/08/2024 22:26

Having just sorted out all our wooden railway for the next generation, it's a versatile toy that's different every time and can be built on.

Namechangencncnc · 09/08/2024 22:29

She might like the Playmobil. I waited until 4ish with my older girl but my little one is almost 2 and loves pottering about with the Playmobil people and the vehicles.

Namechangencncnc · 09/08/2024 22:31

Also at that age my daughter liked lots of little figures that she kept in a tin. So hatchimals, little sylvanians, Gabby's dollhouse figures, anything small and cute and sparkly. Polly pockets.

Cheeseismyfavourite · 09/08/2024 22:32

This is my two year olds favourite toy you can pick them up on Facebook market place for around £10/£15

Agree on the ice cream toy. Every child who comes to our house plays with it, regardless of age.

Sunshine9218 · 09/08/2024 22:38

My 2.5yo loves pretending to mix, pour, give me medicine, bring me cups of tea, cake etc with toy spoons, cups, bottles etc. Maybe get some toy food duplo too or build ice creams or 'cakes' out of it (mine isn't interested in duplo unless it's food).

Can you post a photo or link of the padlock toy because I think mine would love it?

Also this I've been meaning to get.

My daughter had a toy wooden till from John Lewis which was very well used, particularly with a wooden coffee machine - she had an excellent coffee shop again which I was a frequent visitor! She still sometimes plays with it aged 7.

Sylvanian families are also good and often available on Vinted etc.

I came on to say this, and magnatiles. My daughters loved both for many, many years. They also love Busy Books, and the wee figures are very portable. I picked mine up second hand, too.

mauvish · 12/08/2024 14:33

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Re magnatiles; I hadn't heard of them before. I see they're q pricey but you can get sets, and dupes, on marketplace/eBay. Does anyone have any suggestions re how big a set they'd recommend? Anything particular to look out for?

Magnetic tiles are very versatile and long lasting but tend to be enjoyed by the same children that love duplo and then lego. The children that like building things.

My son is 7 and loves all that stuff, but he would never have gone off duplo - it is endlessly entertaining for him still, though it is a lot more lego than duplo now.

My daughter is 9 and plays / has played a little bit with the building toys but it's never been her thing in the same way.

If she doesn't really like duplo I wouldn't necessarily get magnetic tiles.

Plastic animals have got a lot of mileage in this house. Lots of stories played out, zoos made, tiger battles waged, etc.

Byeckythump · 12/08/2024 15:35

Melissa and Doug ice cream set
Plastic flower garden building set (Amazon)
Magic painting books
Play doh

Rawrrawr1 · 12/08/2024 16:15

Magnatiles.. we have two boxes, initially had one ( was £25 from amazon) but we added to it with another box, they become car ramps, animal homes and dragon caves in our house
