Are you a Londoner? Could you help?

Please!

Staying just off old Kent road and have tickets to Kensington Palace tomorrow morning but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get there via bus or tube.

We are near the bricklayer arms flyover - do any Londoners possibly know how to get to Kensington palace? I'm going round in circles and possibly going mad in the process.

You are about five minutes away (by bus) from Elephant and Castle Tube.
I would use that as a starting point.

Download the Citymapper app. Brilliant real-time directions. Invaluable!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 09/08/2024 20:51

Take a bus to elephant and castle. I think the 453, 53, or 172 go there from memory. Bus Times is a good free app.
From Elephant take the Bakerloo line (brown) to Embankment (northbound) then change for the District line (green westbound) to High St Kensington, maybe changing at Earl's Court, of the Circle line.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 09/08/2024 20:51

You don't sound like you're far from Borough tube. So I'd walk there, Northern line to Bank then Central to Lancaster Gate; then it's a nice walk through Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens.

Seconded. This app is excellent

Pottingup · 09/08/2024 20:54

Citymapper says walk to Elephant and Castle or take a bus - then up to Oxford Circus on the tube the change to Central line and go to Queensway and walk. I would download Citymapper - it’s really helpful

Toothy321 · 09/08/2024 20:54

Have you tried Google maps!? How are you trying to find a route? It's not so complex. Either get bus 148 all the way there if you're anxious (slow & there will be traffic) or walk or bus to elephant and castle, bakerloo line to Oxford Circus, change to central line to Queensway. But Google maps or city mapper apps will show you

bryceQ · 09/08/2024 20:55

Get city mapper app - I use it all the time and have lived in London for 16 years

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/08/2024 20:55

Bus or walk to Elephant and Castle. Bakerloo line from Elephant and Castle to Oxford Circus, change onto the Central line. Go westbound on the central line 3 stops to Queensway.

Toothy321 · 09/08/2024 20:56

Lol same advice from multiple people! Really if you're so anxious just get the 148 and allow a lot of time, at least you don't have to change

SM33 · 09/08/2024 20:56

Do you know which tube station you are closest to? The two closest stations to the palace are Queensway underground and High Street Kensington. Both of which are a 10 minute walk

AtlasPine · 09/08/2024 20:56

City Mapper makes it a reasonable journey and outlines each step clearly.

If you're tourist take the 12 to Oxford Circus then Central Line (red) west to Kensington High Street. The 12 goes over Westminster Bridge and you get to see all the sights.

Kendodd · 09/08/2024 21:04

In the summer the 12 would sometimes be open top as well, although I haven't seen them in years.

I’m a Londoner and I live close to where you’re staying, hi!

Unfortunately there is no easy or fast way to get to Kensington palace, but you have a couple of options, depending on your preference.

My preferred option would be the bus: the 148 from Elephant and Castle. You can walk to Elephant and Castle or get a bus down the New Kent Road; buses 1, 188, 53, 453, 63, 363 and 172 will get you there in 5 minutes.

You will only be charged once for as many bus rides as you like within an hour, so you might as well jump on a bus to Elephant.

At elephant you need to find stop Z, the London college of communication (if you get the 53 or 453 to elephant, they also stop at that stop, so if you’re worried about getting lost stick with those 2!). From there the 148 will take you to victoria gate, a pleasant 20 minute walk through Kensington Gardens to the palace. On the way you go over Westminster bridge so you’ll have a nice view of Big Ben!

The alternative is the Bakerloo line from elephant to Paddington, it’s a slightly longer walk from Paddington to Kensington palace though. And no nice views!

Hope that helps. Feel free to message me for any local recommendations for the area too!

NameChangeAndLifeChange · 09/08/2024 21:08

It depends where in the Old Kent Road. It's a big road!

yesornothatisthequestion · 09/08/2024 21:10

Can't thank you all enough! Got it! I've never stayed this side side of London and I live in Cornwall so as much as I try to work my way around public transport I genuinely have only used it bi-annually - it's quite alien to me to navigate.

To clarify - not anxious at all - just was struggling to understand what google was saying but those apps sound much clearer so will download now.

Thanks again. Honestly, love MN for moments like this.

@CarrotSoupwithCheese thank you hugely for your directions. We followed them to the letter and got there easily. You also made the bus network make sense to me so thank you.

We then used Citymapper for the rest of our trip which was ideal although the walking directions part of it drained my battery. Thank you everybody that recommended that app.
