Gap Year question- funding

bellinisurge · 09/08/2024 19:48

Did has good savings (including money we had saved over the years in dribs and drabs) for her gap year but has raised the question of me giving her a £50 weekly food allowance while she's on her travels. I think her savings should be her only source of money for this.

I'm right, aren't I?

Thanks

It’s not really a case of right or wrong
If you want to give her the money then do
If you don’t ,then don’t 🤷‍♀️

Why can’t she work and travel? Many do this. If you can afford the money, give it but I would expect her to work and save. Then go abroad. Has she any inclination to work or is it all play with you funding it?

Personally I’d still give it. If DD was at home I’d likely be paying far more for her (food shopping etc) so continuing the £50 per week whilst on her travels seems reasonable.

Gap years are encouraged in our house but they pay for them themselves. We pay for education. They pay for the fun stuff.

Where is she going and what are the plans? You can get working holiday visas for Australia & New Zealand which enables travellers to work 3 months then travel for a bit.

Thanks everyone. Going to provide her with a food allowance as she travels.
Your comments helped me reflect. It's a squeeze but I can do it.
