Car boot sales - do you have any tips? What sells well?

I'm haveing a clear out and am going to do a car boot. I haven't done one for decades, all I remember is to price things low!

Have you got any other tips? I don't have a rail - how should I display the clothes?

Space in the car is limited - what should I prioritise? (My aim is to make money, i can take what I don't sell to the charity shop in the week).

I haven't gone throutgh everything yet, but I have a fair amount of:

  • kids' clothes - some from brand like mini-boden, others just standard supermarket stuff (but nice and in good condition) plus school uniform for our local school
  • plus size women's clothes
  • adult books
  • kids' books - picture books and chapter books
  • various kids' toys including lego. some boxed, some loose, plus some craft stuff (unused)
  • unopened beauty products and bathroom stuff
  • a vintage wooden kids' chair and desk
  • general bits and bobs from around the house, still going through stuff...
  • a leather jacket but I'd want at least £30 for that

Any tips about what would sell best, or what else I need to bring or be aware of, gratefull received!

You can maybe hang your good stuff on your car or on the front of your table.

You can get decent money for good quality, branded clothes at car boot sales. I use a rack and hangers for the good clothes and sometimes individually price them. The other clothes I would sort into boxes and write the sizes on the box. People love a good rummage. Prepare to haggle, but you can still get decent prices.

At the end, sort out what you want to keep/donate to charity/sell on eBay or Vinted/keep for another car boot drop to charity shop on way home.

Be friendly and be willing to have a chat.
As pp have said, sell cheap (trousers £1, tops 50p etc), small kids toys and clothes as a bundle.

Offer a bundle price when people show interest, for example, "3 nail polishes for £2, my dear", or "men's shoes for £4 each, or two pairs for £6".

Currently Boots items go well, like soap and glory, or make up items, again always as a bundle.

Audio books, cushions and pillows, along with blankets and crockery seems to interest buyers.

And smile 😊

You could make a low rail with a pole tied across the backs of two folding chairs, and display other things on the chair seats. Put a groundsheet down to stop things getting dirty if they're trailing. If you're using a wooden pasting table, you could screw cup hooks into the front of it to put a few clothes hangers on.

Watch out when you first set up, because people will mob you, and want to start buying before you're all set up. You need a friend with you to watch your stuff when you're setting up, otherwise some will get nicked. Watch out for the trick dealers use of getting a discount on each individual thing, and when the whole lot is added up, then asking for a further discount. I definitely agree with pricing everything up - having to ask the price puts people off.

We divided the table up into priced sections, clearly marked and just put sale items in the sections 50p, £1, £2.00. As the sale continued, we moved stuff along to the cheaper sections to reduce it.

We only individually labelled the oddments that were more expensive, separating them on a tarpauline on the ground.

Towards the end of the sale we walked through and asked the regular sellers if they were interested in everything we had left. This raised another £10 and made sure we went home with an empty car.

How do you manage to get so many sales? My experience of listing things is either I have to price ridicously low, or they hang about for ages! Have you got loads of stuff on there?

Having a look at "we buy books"...

@llamalines I'm not sure how I do well tbh! I try to list a couple of things a couple of times a week, I have 2 "vinted bags" under my bed. One is for things that have been listed and one is for things that I need to photograph and upload.

I have 4 children so lots of kids clothes to sell and I only sell good quality brands eg John Lewis, Boden, joules, frugi etc. m and s always seen to sell quite well aswell.

I price fairly low and always accept offers!
