Any 0.4 primary teachers here?

Just wondered how it works for you. What days do you work, when is your PPA time, do you have to go staff meetings, what about inset days that aren't on your work days? How often do you see the other teacher?

Thank you if anyone can answer these questions and let me know any disadvantages!

I did 0.6, but my first PT contract was a job- share with a 0.4.

She did Mon + Tues and I did W., Th., Fri

In every PT job I've had, you only go to staff meetings / INSET on the days you work.
When there was something crucial (eg Safeguarding Training) arranged on an inset day one of us didn't work, we tended to come in. HT would either pay us a day's supply or let us take a day off at another time to suit.

PPA should be 10% of your teaching time.

We didn't really see each other.

My contract is actually 0.44 so I'm paid to do my PPA at home. It's relatively common, my previous job was the same. Saves trying to squeeze PPA into one of a teaching day and I always end up doing loads at home so might as well get paid an extra 10% for it!

Inset wise, in this job I'm only expected to attend ones on my working days but in my previous job could claim overtime for coming in for insets on my non working days (and was expected to attend them all).

I work Thursday / Friday now. Last job was Monday / Tuesday. I preferred Mon/Tues. It's a pain picking things up midweek and the kids are knackered. Plus I feel like it hangs over me more all week. It was nice waltzing out on a Tuesday and knowing I was done for the week!

Thank you @NewName24 and @3ormorecharacters ! How and when did you communicate with the other teacher?

I'm on a 4 day week. If an inset day is on my day off I check with the principal if I am needed, if so then I'll attend and get that day back (usually at a date of my choosing). I'm a foundation stage teacher so I don't get PPA as the kids go home at 2pm (though I do cover key stage 2 classes 6 times a month). I plan for the cover teacher. I probably shouldn't have too but as I know the class so well it's easier for me just to jot down what needs covered with the resources ready. I do all communication with parents, reports, planning etc. The other teacher will leave notes for me if there's anything important I need to know or just call in and see me on the next day I'm in.

I did a 0.4 about 5 years ago.

I didn't have to go to year group planning meetings. If INSET days fell on my days (Thursday and Friday), I attended them.

I think the only planning I did was a short reading activity each day.

It was a lovely job in many ways but I'm still glad I've left teaching!

Thank you @NewName24 and @3ormorecharacters ! How and when did you communicate with the other teacher?

We worked really hard in the first instance to divide the curriculum up so that we weren't reliant on the other person, and where the dc had got to in their lessons, to be able to start teaching on our first day.
So, easy with the subjects you teach once or twice a week (say I did Geography and she did art or whatever), and with maths I remember I did 'numberwork' and she did 'topic' - so weighing, volume, etc. I can't remember the precise details, but it meant we were fairly independent of one another in terms of planning and marking.
We had 2 books we would write any notes in locked in the desk drawer - one for notes from briefings or 'staff info' if you like, and the other tended to be about pastoral / emotional things re the children.

We alternate the planning for maths and English each term, then just plan for the foundation subjects each of us teaches on our days. We either text or email a quick catch up message at the end of our working week with info about how the class got on in maths / English and any other important handover information. We don't see each other in person much but I think it pays to try and forge a good relationship anyway.

I did two days a week. Staff meetings were on my working day but I only had to attend 2/5 of them obviously. Same with training days. Communicate with other teacher through text/notes.

Thank you everyone! Just wanted to know what the usual was.

I used to only do Inservice days if they fell on my working day and same with staff meetings. I didn't get PPA weekly but was allowed to save it up so every 5/6 weeks I got a whole day off. I did have a very good HT though so others may not be as accommodating.

Cavalierchaos · 14/08/2024 09:01

@RaraRachael did they expect you to catch up with what you missed in staff meetings/insets? Or was it totally fine for you to just not know?
Can I ask how often you saw/spoke to the other teacher?

There were always minutes of any staff meetings on the workgroup so it was easy to find out what had been going on. Also, our staff meetings rotated from Monday to Thursdays after school so every few weeks, each part timer was there for one.

I didn't really meet up with the other teacher that much, maybe once a month but we were in regular contact.
