Handed in Notice but now work have present a counteroffer

How do you decide what to do in this situation? I've never been in this situation before.

I looked for a new job as I felt like I wasn't progressing how I wanted to and landed a brilliant offer with a great opportunity to become a Partner.

However, when I handed my Notice in, my current employer has suddenly revealed their progression plans for me, stating they will do anything to keep me.

It feels like a kick in the teeth it's taken me hanging my notice in to get what I wanted but it shouldn't have been a surprise as I know colleagues who had to do the same.

I had expressed to them my career desires but they're claiming I wasn't assert enough about how soon I wanted them (I disagree).

My post seems like a ramble of thoughts because that's how my brain is right now. One hand I've a brilliant new job opportunity but I am nervous to take it as I LOVE my current team and I enjoy what we do. But then if I don't take the new job, I'm worried I'll be resented by my MD anyway and I don't want to miss out on a chance to work at this new place with clear route to becoming a Partner.

What would you do and how would you begin rationalising your thoughts?

You're worth as much as anyone is willing to pay. Don't feel bad about that!

Let it play out, then still leave.

An update, a bidding war seems to have begun and I now feel horribly overpriced

Well done, but you're clearly not 'horribly overpriced'; shift your perspective, you have been horribly undervalued for too long...let it find its level.

Jourl · 13/08/2024 20:08

Yes perhaps this is just that, I'm not horribly overpriced but instead have been used to being undervalued.

I think I'm shocked because I would have been very happy to have been promoted with a 10% pay rise, as I was originally asking during my Reviews. But now I'm looking at a 50% payrise

Wow that’s amazing OP. Well done. Might make your decision harder but this is life changing.

Never, ever doubt your true worth.

If you were a man you wouldn’t be feeling guilty and everyone would be telling you that you should go for more. More women need to stand up and negotiate their worth on the work place.

Like a PP said, you’ve been undervalued all this time!

Beautiful3 · 13/08/2024 20:13

Well done @Jourl You deserve it 👏

RubieChewsDay · 13/08/2024 20:49

How are you feeling about the fact they were unwilling to give you even a 10% pay rise previously? I think the saying 'when someone shows you who they are believe them' is appropriate here.

Motnight · 13/08/2024 21:35

Brilliant news, Op.

JimPanzee · 13/08/2024 22:10

@Jourl 50% increase is phenomenal! Well done you 👏 Don't doubt your worth!!!

leeloo1 · 13/08/2024 22:13

That’s amazing! Take the new job with the newly raised higher salary and be proud of your achievements. ☺️

Fivews · 13/08/2024 22:25

You weren't valued and supported to progress, they might have seen that now but it'll stall.
One they've made a decision to leave most people will move in 18 months, even with a counter-offer.

Make the jump and fly

So exactly how long and how much more have your current employers been paying the men to do the same job that they refused to give you a measly 10%? Sounds like if they could afford 50% at the drop of a hat that you have been systematically underpaid for years.

Mumof1andacat · 13/08/2024 22:30

I would still leave. They didn't value enough. A leopard doesn't change its spots...

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 14/08/2024 04:55

Having left a place where I was happy but undervalued for a new place that was all talk and the people were horrid, so I left after 2 years, I'd say consider staying seriously. There are lots of positives about the current place, and it sounds like you think it's a better place longer term.

Plus if you do end up leaving anyway, you be going from a position on a 50% higher salary.

Now is the time to get what you want - make sure to get it all in writing. Maybe get them to pay for you to have a business coach whom you choose, given they say you lack assertiveness (and albeit half joking said you now feel overvalued...)

Codlingmoths · 14/08/2024 05:03

I think you move. You say to your current firm that you’ve lowballed your offer- this other firm just met me and offered this. You’ve known me for a long time, thought you could ignore my clearly stated advancements goals, and now you are only willing to match their offer? I don’t feel valued.

Jourl · 14/08/2024 08:55

I do think I would benefit from a coach, my main influence in decision making is considering what happens if I fail.

Meh, if you do, you've done it on 50% higher pay.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 14/08/2024 08:59

I was in your position once OP and I took the offer from my current employer and stayed.

Eighteen months later, I was back where I was when I handed my notice it. Basically, all they did was give me two pay rises in advance.

Leave.

yeah, it really is a good point! Seems obvious when you consider it and yet I can easily imagine that it would never have occurred to me independently in that situation
