Limited company tax mileage - how to declare if visits are confidential?

Hi there

I'm about to submit my first limited company tax return. I work privately in the health sector and for a GP doing home visits.

I am able to claim for mileage but wondered how I do this accurately without 'declaring' the addresses (which are obviously confidential). If I was audited by HMRC, do they request 'where' you've visited or are they happy with mileage only?

Many thanks.

Rachel

I would keep your own log of the visits and the address and mileage at start and finish of visit back to your work base. You could just put the post code unless you are in the Highlands of Scotland where a postcode covers a huge area. Or use the road and no number. (Are they put on the GP system under your name when you do them?)
I was never asked for a log of my mileage in 32 years as a GP.
If you have somewhere to record your mileage daily as you do your visits then that will suffice as evidence according to our accountants.

Accountant here - give each client a code and then use that code on a spreadsheet to record your mileage. That way it is easily trackable if HMRC did want to look further.

However, HMRC do have the power to inspect everything and would ask you to provide full records if they think the mileage isn't genuine, but it is 100% confidential.

Brilliant, thank you so much. Good idea.
