Acquiring a bed and mattress

DS is moving into a rental property for next weekend. Despite it being listed as a ‘fully furnished’, and it being verbally confirmed that there would be a bed, there is no bed or mattress in the bedroom!! Not particularly bothered about this, as it otherwise it is a nice flat and the letting agent has been helpful and prompt. And we can probably source one fairly cheaply.

Any ideas where a bed and mattress can be sourced on the cheap? We’re thinking Ikea, looks like we can get both for about £150. He has a car to transport it. Bed would come flat-pack presumably, only problem is a double mattress would not fit into the car. Unless it can be squashed, or is a rolled type one?

We’re thinking a rolled one might be best, any idea where we can a get a cheap one of these and would it fit in a (smallish) car? He could get one delivered but delivery from Ikea is £25!! So we’re thinking we probably won’t bother with that.

We’ve looked on FB marketplace/ eBay etc but only problem is the transport. So again, that’s probably not an option.

As an aside, would you take it up with the landlord? There was nothing official to confirm it contained a bed and mattress and contract didn’t specify what was actually included, but it was advertised as ‘fully furnished’.

Yes I absolutely would take it up with the landlord. And the letting agent. This is not a fully furnished property.
You also need a full inventory list to confirm what is actually included in the property and the state of each item at the beginning of the tenancy.
I'm sorry but this letting agent is not helpful or efficient. This is literally part of their job.

Just to add: you need a full inventory (including condition of items and property) so you don't get stung for the cost of replacement at the end of the tenancy.
This letting agent is not on the ball at all.

Thanks. We’ll ask them about that. There is a full inventory, which includes everything else you’d expect of a ‘fully furnished’ property.

Guess it’s a lesson for next time to ask for that BEFORE signing the contract, despite what the advert says. Properties are like hens teeth around here so we just had to go ahead with anything we could get our hands on!!

When DD moved into an unfurnished flat last year we bought the cheapest IKEA bed and paid for it to be delivered. When she moved out we donated it to British Heart Foundation.

If you happen to be in South Shields there might still be a nearly new bed for sale.

Failing that, I would recommend them for second hand furniture anyway.

IKEA mattresses come rolled. At least mine did…

Well I'd definitely raise it as missing with the landlord, you don't want to be charged for a missing bed when he moves out! Some of the IKEA ones are rolled so might fit in his car, you could also try Dunelm?

Thanks, I think we’ll try going to Ikea. Easiest and cheapest all around.

And yy, good point about letting the agent know. Could have been a miscommunication somewhere and they think there is a bed!!

I think IKEA mattresses do come rolled up now.
