Would you do this commute?

I've been offered a job
Shifts are 7-3pm
3pm -11 pm
One week early
One week lates

It's gonna mean I need to take 2 busses each way but on the late I would get picked up off partner

So the bus stop is outside my house.
It's the 6.19 bus gets me to the next stop for 6.30
Next bus is 6.40 and gets me there for 6.52

On the days I get a lift it's 13 mins away

Would you do it when you have to get 2 busses?
And means getting up at 5.45 am ?

I would, the early mornings would be tough but you get so much free time. It's things like shopping and personal appointments that are hard to fit in in 9 to 5 jobs. You'll have no rush hour traffic to deal with and a lift home every other week. Maybe treat yourself to a morning taxi once a week or every other week if it's only 13 minutes away.

DoublePeonies · 07/08/2024 08:59

45 min commute? It's just over what I do. I wouldn't have thought it's that unreasonable.
Early starts are aways going to involve early alarm clocks! How much do you wat the job?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 07/08/2024 09:03

How reliable are the buses though?

MistyMountainTop · 07/08/2024 09:16

Have you thought about getting a bike, or a scooter?

FrenchandSaunders · 07/08/2024 09:18

If the buses are usually reliable it's not bad at all.

whowhatwerewhy · 07/08/2024 09:21

Yes absolutely, can't see a problem

NameChangeAndLifeChange · 07/08/2024 09:23

Jeez. I can't believe you ask.

I have to do a 90 minute commute each way on a bus, train and two tubes!!!!

kiana2015 · 07/08/2024 09:23

I've done two buses to work before, used to be bus at 7 second bus at 8 and then arrived at 845. Buses were usually fine in the morning, odd time it was cancelled.
In the evening I had awful trouble for buses being cancelled but it was later 520, hours will be around school time so although busier should be more reliable

newleafontheplantjohn · 07/08/2024 09:26

If the buses are reliable then yes, it sounds ok.

Has made me realise I really need to be more grateful for my commute though.

I live 10 minute walk from train station. Train takes 15 minutes then a 10 minute walk at the other end.

I really should appreciate it more.

Sirzy · 07/08/2024 09:29

That doesn’t sound much at all. With being a none driver it will always take you longer.

Personally though I would get an earlier bus as 8 minutes leeway wouldn’t be enough for me.

WhatNoRaisins · 07/08/2024 09:31

Agree, depends on how reliable the busses were.

Growlybear83 · 07/08/2024 09:31

My journey to most places I worked was 90 minutes each way for years, so I would have been delighted with 45 minutes. Your shift pattern sounds great to me. Although it's only twice or three times a week, my daughter currently gets up at 5 am to commute between London and Birmingham, which involves a bus from outside our house, tube, train, and bus. It takes her three hours each way, but it doesn't bother her at all as she can ether work or sleep on the train.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 07/08/2024 09:32

That's a 33 minute commute.

I leave my house at 7:37 and get to work at 8:45. It's fine. You'll be fine.

DaisyFloop · 07/08/2024 09:34

I'm normally one for if something is further than my living room do I want to go, but 30 minutes isn't bad. Is the job something you will enjoy?

6 hours travelling sounds awful, why does she work so far from home? She's got strong work ethic that's for sure!

NellietheNumpty · 07/08/2024 09:40

I like time commuting to chill. A bus change is a bit of a stress.
I agree treat yourselves to a taxi once each of early commutes, once every 2 weeks. You will get into the swing of it quickly.

You really should that's so lucky, one of my jobs was an hour walk to the train station, 15 mins on the train and then another half hour/45 mins at the other end and I wouldn't finish until 8 some nights was getting home 10:30/11

GrumpyPanda · 07/08/2024 09:40

Two bus rides 10 min each. What's the actual distance? Sounds eminently cyclable which would be much less of a PITA.

Underlig · 07/08/2024 09:46

Of course. That’s very doable. 35-min commute and only one change? No-brainer

MuggleMe · 07/08/2024 09:57

My concern would be the 6.52 regularly being late. The commute is ok once you get into the swing of things.

I assume you don't have many options, you could keep looking?

whowhatwerewhy · 07/08/2024 10:48

What commute do you do now ? How does this compare ?
