Want 70 x 1$ bills

Hiya,

We want to take lots of 1$ bills on holiday to tip the staff. We’re looking at the post office to exchange our pounds to dollars, but will they be able to give it all to us in 1$ bills? If not, how can we swap them in the UK?

We’re just back from a holiday where tipping is very much appreciated, we just took larger currency and our hotel reception changed it into smaller notes.

I need a load of small notes for tipping, I asked at Tesco and they cover small notes so I can get 1, 2 and 5's from there, about 70 dollars worth.

I would say you probably need 5$ for tipping, a dollar is nothing these days but yes you can request them when you order your currency

The thing is, we aren’t actually going to the USA but to Egypt, so I’m not sure the hotel will be able to exchange it. However we’ve been told the staff at the hotel have a preference for dollar tips over their own Egyptian money and English pounds.

@Fluffyflipflop we went to Mexico, they use dollars & pesos. Staff actually preferred Pesos, so it didn’t cost them to change, which we took also and got them changed to smaller notes. Does hotel have a Facebook page - ask the question on there.

Fluffyflipflop · 07/08/2024 07:09

Yes it’s the hotel that told us about the preference for dollars. We were going to a change to Egyptian money but apparently even the independent shops outside of the hotel complex would rather have dollars, pounds or euros than their own currency.

They'd rather have dollars pounds and euros so they can rip you off with the exchange rate. Even at the airport on the way back they'd accept all these currencies and the number was the same in all so you'd pay £10 or 10 dollars or 10 euros the latter being about £8 or £9.

Just take a Chase card or similar and get Egyptian money out of cash machine in the hotel, work out how much is a £ or two and tip with that. The value of Egyptian notes are low so you'll definitely have small denominations.

Good news! Our local post office can do it.
