Ways to get access to medicine available in USA

FreeeeeeeeFreeFalling · 06/08/2024 21:52

There's an extremely benign, safe, medical product (a skin cream) which can be prescribed by a dermatologist in the USA but not the UK (my UK derm would love to prescribe, but it's not licensed here). Are there any reliable mechanisms for getting hold of this without actually going to the USA? TIA

What is the cream OP? I’m certain that someone here will have bought/used it before and will be able to advise

I used to get DH to bring Retinol home from business trips 🤣

Is it hydrocortisone? I bring it back to my friend, along with melatonin, every time I come back to the UK.

You can buy hydrocortisone cream in any chemist

It's a bit niche... topical spironolactone. I think it's prescription only in USA(?). You can get the oral medication in the UK but not the topical version, weirdly.

Not hydrocortisone. But that's interesting about melatonin. It's weird how available that seems, given it's almost impossible to get hold of here.

Try all day chemist. They sell tretinoin and hydroquinone

There’s a Reddit thread I read a while ago as I was also looking and people were discussing how to get in the uk, just dug it out again. Someone recommended getting it prescribed from https://www.uncouth.co.uk/

Hormonal acne

Is there a good reason why it's not available under license in the UK?

Haggisfish3 · 07/08/2024 01:34

I use biovea to get melatonin.

YesItsMe44 · 07/08/2024 02:10

Both the cream and tablet are only available with a prescription in the US. Hydrocortisone, melatonin, etc., are OTC.

LizzeyBenett · 07/08/2024 02:30

I'd something is unlicensed it doesn't mean it's not available it just means you need a prescription, would your GP not prescribe it if you explained why you wanted to try it ? Would probably be far less harsh than prescribing any tretinoin. Have a look into Hypochlorous Acid it's a spray and you can get a cheaper version in boots than what's marketed for beauty / skincare the boots version is marketed for babies but I'm using it as part of my skin regimen and haven't had any breakouts . It's called Vital Baby Aquaint Sanitising Water

Try somewhere like jasemedical.com

I suspect mainly financial reasons. It work, and is very cheap - old, generic drug. They are in the process of developing new topical drugs using the same mechanism and these will be very expensive. The market will depend on cheap alternatives not being available. Pharma is a dirty business...

Thank you. They seem to only cover America and Canada, though :(

Are there dermatologists in the USA who would take on and send meds to a UK patient, do you think?? Anyone any experience of that?

Is it available anywhere in Europe? Even post Brexit it's possible to fill prescriptions cross border
