Amazon knows my new card details!

Has this happened to anyone else?

A couple of days ago, I went to add my card details to Amazon (I'd had the card a while, but hadn't added it to Amazon as I was using another one), only to find it was already there. I assumed I'd added it and forgotten about it.

But then yesterday, my wife got a new card, and has just now seen it is already on our Amazon account, without either of us having added it!

Can anyone explain how this has happened?!

I used to work for Santander so I know this happens. It's a thing. Companies can charge your new card. Not sure how they do it but they can and do.

I always sign back in and delete my card details as soon as I've paid. This means it's not stored on Amazon.

At least we're not both going mad! But how do they do this?!

Do you both have iPhone? Is it not related to your Apple wallet if you've updated card on there?

Doggymummar · 06/08/2024 21:43

The pattern of card numbers is always the same so it's easy to guess what the new number will be, only the last 4 I think change. I used to work at Amex and once you know the pattern it's easy to predict, so maybe they do that?

Yes and I’m happy it did to save me the faff

If you have a card and it expires or is stopped due to possible fraud there is a mechanism whereby reputable and approved users get details of the new one.

My debit card was stopped in June due suspected fraud. Apart from one outfit companies with continuous charging authority on the old card have charged as expected.

Happened to me when NatWest switched from Visa to Mastercard. I found the new card details already entered when I went to do it. I don't have Apple/iPhone, so nothing to do with that.

Ooh I can answer this one courtesy of fraudulent activity on my card yesterday 🙄🤣

When you save your card details to a website for payments in the future it creates "a sort of virtual version of the card" (quote from lovely banking man) and when you have a new card issued the virtual version is also updated.

When I had to have the fraud sorted out yesterday the guy had to spend sometime unlinking all the websites before issuing the new card so as to protect my account.

@GeminiGiggles
oh that’s worrying!
I too had fraudulent activity on my credit card recently so that is good to know!

TwistedSisters · 06/08/2024 22:31

Yes it happened to me and I was very confused 😄 good to know why!
