Does anyone know a card game called (or involving) a run of 3 and a pair?

When I was a child, our family used to play a game with a deck of playing cards that we called ‘3 and a pair’. The aim was to be the first player whose hand included a run of 3 consecutively numbered cards eg 4,5 and 6 (in any/ all suits) plus a pair of 2 of the same cards eg 2x Kings.

i thought I’d google it to check the rules, but google hasn’t found what I was looking for.

I’m hoping that perhaps someone on here remembers the game better than I do and can explain the basics of how many cards each player starts with and how to proceed etc.

Many thanks.

Cribbage? Or possibly Rummy, where you have to make “melds” or three or four cards of same value?

Check beany I'm haven't played for ages but I think that may be it or similar

I know that as rummy (or gin rummy?). Each player gets dealt 7 cards and the leftover pile gets drawn from. You pick up a card and choose to keep or throw away the card you just picked or any other from your hand.

The object of the game is to get out. You are allowed to lay on the table, either runs of 3/4 all same suit or 3/4 of the same 'number' card.

I think the gin variety allows players to pick up multiple discarded cards as long as they immediately use the lowest (in the pile) card.

Gosh, hard to explain in text.

We played a game similar to that when I was young. My parents called it Newmarket.

suburburban · 06/08/2024 21:34

Used to love Newmarket

This sounds like Rummy

Fifferfefferfeff · 06/08/2024 21:35

Sounds like Rummy!

AdaColeman · 06/08/2024 21:38

That could be gin rummy.

Jellybeanz456 · 06/08/2024 21:46

We used to play something similar but more cards we called it 3 of 1 4 of other

GoogleWhacked · 06/08/2024 21:51

We used to play a similar game, we called it 5- card. You are dealt 5 cards and have to make a pair and a 3 (either in a run or 3 matching).

Oblomov24 · 06/08/2024 21:51

Rummy.

mm81736 · 06/08/2024 21:52

Gin rummy is with 7 cards though.Newmarket is completely different game

FeelingUnsure99 · 06/08/2024 21:53

It's a form of rummy I guess?

The only rummy games I've played involve 7 cards in the hand so you need to do a run of 3 plus 4 of the same number, or 3 of the same number plus a run of 4, or a run of 7.

Newmarket is completely different.

Marmite27 · 06/08/2024 21:53

Sounds like Rummy, which we call 3s and 4s. Though it’s easier to win with a run!

Good for teaching children to recognise numbers and sequences.

Vettrianofan · 06/08/2024 21:54

Gin rummy

Brag? Is it what was played in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels?

menopausalmare · 06/08/2024 21:57

It's rummy, played with two packs. Each round you need to collect different things, eg, a run of 4 and a set of three. Plus, each round has a beanie card which can be used as any card.

suburburban · 06/08/2024 21:58

Did anyone play

Summergarden · 06/08/2024 22:29

Thanks everyone!

It seems to be a version of rummy, so I can research that now I know.

startstopengine · 06/08/2024 22:37

Newmarket?

Frosty1000 · 06/08/2024 22:42

There's something similar to gin rummy called contract rummy which may be what you're looking for.
