How much to pay a teenage cat feeder?

Never had to pay before- always had reciprocal arrangements with adults. But neighbour's 14 year old is desperately saving, so I offered him the job. Twice a day to give some wet food and top up water and crunchies for 5 days. What's the going rate? No litter trays-just the feeding.

£10 a day?

Proper pet sitters charge about £20 a day for this I’ve found.

Boltonb · 06/08/2024 12:57

£5/day? They’re not having to do very much.

Radarkeigh · 06/08/2024 12:58

Are you on holiday or is he just coming round your house?!

I'd say a fiver a day mainly cos its normally a reciprocal arrangement which I assume will continue with you doing their cat duties when they are away so you're best off keeping the price low!

I pay £10/day.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 06/08/2024 12:59

We paid a teenage neighbour £50 for two weeks of feeding our pets. I wanted to pay more but the parents thought even £50 was too much.

I think £5 a day is about right.

Unkeel · 06/08/2024 13:00

For 5 days and assuming they are a couple of doors down, I would give £35 - 40. £10 a day seems quite a lot for probably 20 mins work per day.

That is a bit mean. OK there is not much work but it is a tie.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/08/2024 13:01

I'd pay them after you return, to a well fed cat! But yeah, a tenner a day seems reasonable. It'll only take them twenty minutes tops. But its twice and needs to be consistent. Do you have a ring camera?

EasilyDisturbed · 06/08/2024 13:01

I pay £10 a day (for two visits, total time about an hour including walking to and from their houses twice). With litter trays too. My DC get paid the same and often feed and water gerbils etc as part of the same visit.

NewName24 · 06/08/2024 13:04

No more than a fiver (presuming they are fairly nearby and walk there).

No-one else in an unskilled job is getting a fiver for 20mins of work.

NewName24 · 06/08/2024 13:04

*fiver a day

Obvs, not for the week Grin

JaketheVaulter · 06/08/2024 13:05

We pay £10 a day, there's the responsibility of keys etc.

It is usually twice a day and will definitely take more than 20 mins in total.

MapleTreeValley · 06/08/2024 13:08

£10 a day for two visits.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/08/2024 13:09

£15 a day for a morning and evening visit. £10 for a single visit per day.

There's no reason to take the piss because of his age.

pimmpomm · 06/08/2024 13:11

We pay our professional cat sitters £8 a visit, two cats, twice a day when we're away. So £16 a day. I think £10 a day is very reasonable for a teenager helping out. It's also about the responsibility this lad has with access to your home. He's likely to be a lot more reliable, considerate and trustworthy in your home if you pay him properly.

Cobblersorchard · 06/08/2024 13:12

£5 a visit so £10/day

CurlewKate · 06/08/2024 13:13

Gosh-it didn't cross my mind to pay a fiver a day! Or to be so mistrustful. Why are some people assuming he won't do a good job?😮

Likemyjealouseel · 06/08/2024 13:14

£5 per day

Radarkeigh · 06/08/2024 13:17

So many people ignoring the fact that its normally a cost free reciprocal arrangement i.e. OP looks after neighbours cats when they go away and vice versa, so really they're mugging themselves here, its just to raise some funds for a 14 yr old kid. A fiver a day sounds fair. What were you thinking OP?

Hobbesmanc · 06/08/2024 13:18

We pay a professional cat sitter £12.50 per visit. So £25 per day. It's probably high but we've three cats one on a restrictive diet. So feeding and trays. It's complicated with the gate code and then the house alarms etc so I'm happy to pay. With travel time etc that's probably not far off minimum wage.

Lockdownlucy76 · 06/08/2024 13:20

£5 per visit is what we pay a local teen. So £10 a day.

Wowwww · 06/08/2024 13:24

£5 a day would be £2.50 so sounds very stingy to me! remembering as well he has a tie to his day. I think he needs £10 a day.

Wowwww · 06/08/2024 13:25

sorry would be £2.50 a visit

scoobiedew · 06/08/2024 13:28

I would offer £10/day at the very least. OK it's a a quick and easy job (assuming everything goes smoothly and nothing unexpected happens) but he's a neighbour and a young person who is trying to earn money and gain some responsibility. I would want to encourage some goodwill in this scenario, especially if you think you might want to use him again in the future.
