Newcastle - must see and do's?

Dd1 is very keen on Newcastle uni so we're planning to go to their open day next month. We might make an overnight trip out of it so I wondered if there's anything we must see, or do, while we're there 😊

Thanks!

Take the metro and visit the coast at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The Laing, Baltic and Biscuit Factory are interesting art galleries. Have a look and see what is on at the Theatre Royal. They always have a good programme of shows. The riverside walk is nice. The main shopping is at the Haymarket (it’s a stop on the metro).

The campus and Newcastle is beautiful. If you’re just staying over for one night I’d concentrate on town. Walk down Grey street from monument down to the Quayside then along and over the Millennium Bridge to The Baltic. Take the lift to the viewing platform on floor 6.
You could also take the metro or walk to Jesmond and have wander around there. Have a cupper and amazing cake at Cake Stories. The Ouseburn is worth a visit too. (I mention all these as they are v popular with students)
As a pp suggested Tynemouth is beautiful.

It's a gorgeous part of the country.

Probably the biggest thing to see is Hadrian's Wall? I also like Tynemouth Priory, so many years of history on one site and right next to the lovely King Edward's Bay. The Beamish Open Air Museum just outside the city is very good as well.

What kind of thing do you like? Art galleries/museums/theatre/music/eating out?

A walk along the river, see the bridges, go up to the viewing area at the Baltic Art Centre. Generally wander the city centre, its not big.
Metro to Tynemouth, lunch at Riley's Fish Shack, look around Tynemouth Market.

@JaninaDuszejko we're open to anything really! If we don't enjoy it, we won't do it again.

If you visit on a Sunday then the quayside market is worth a look and is on the way to The Baltic. Visit the Magic Hat cafe near the Laing gallery https://www.themagichatcafe.co.uk which makes dishes with food that would otherwise be wasted. The Tyneside Cinema is worth a visit too and the classic gallery is very old school cinema in feel. If you are using public transport including metro and buses consider a £6.80 day ticket which you can use on the metro and all bus companies. You can get them on the bus or from a Metro ticket machine. I agree with visiting The Theatre Royal too. The coast is lovely too.

The Magic Hat Cafe

Newcastle City Centre’s first and only coffee shop, kitchen and events venue dedicated to challenging UK food waste.

These threads about Newcastle always make me laugh, yes, get here for one day then immediately leave for somewhere not in Newcastle.

Depends what you want, for history I would be looking at the " New" castle, town walls and the bridges.

Grey Street, theatre royal, Grainger town for architecture.

Victoria tunnel is a good one too.Near the Ouse Burn.

Newcastle is famous for it's drinking culture, I would be visiting the Ouse burn
" scene" but then I am old. Don't touch the Bigg market.

There are a ton of eating establishments.

9am Drinking in the Black Garter is an eye opener if nothing else. Not many students will be trying that.

If you do want to leave Newcastle then Tynemouth and it's priory and beaches are a good shout.

Usual chain shops on Northumberland Street but it's scruffy at the moment.
