Would you take a job in care if you needed a job?

Pretty much that
I'm admin trained and office roles but I'm having no luck at all
Had a interview yesterday but not hopeful
I have been offered a job as a home carer
The company seems pretty flexible and I can pick my hours etc
It's more pay than the role I applied for yesterday too
It basically entails going around your community and washing /dressing etc
I used to care for my gran myself and nothing phases me really.

Would you take this job until something else comes along ?

If I had to, yes. It wouldn't be my first choice of job but I'd take any job if I needed to put food on the table.

I think care work must be bloody hard & have huge respect for people who do it.

This. ^ I don't judge people who do it, in fact I admire them, but I 100% couldn't never do it. Not in a million years.

BasilPollySybil · 06/08/2024 18:59

No only because I physically couldn’t, certainly not due to looking down on people that do.

It would be literally my last resort. I would be absolutely hopeless at care work, and for me to take such a job would be desperately unfair on those who needed care. I’m too squeamish, too germ phobic, too impatient, too lacking in any sort of natural caring or empathetic instincts. I’m childfree & pet free for a reason…

I could do, and have done, call centre work, retail work & hospitality work. And, if I had to, I would do those jobs again. But not caring.

Yep for sure

VividQuoter · 06/08/2024 19:10

Yes, why not
I know ladies who take hotel jobs which are usually 9 to 3 and then even care home shift if in need of more money

You have looked after your gran, so where is the issue?

I just applied for a street cleaner. I went to uni. So ?

Not if I could avoid it. I think there would be a lot of low-paid jobs I'd rather do than be a carer. I'd hate it and be rubbish at it. I don't look down on other people for doing it though - it's an important job. Fortunately I'm in a job with massive staff shortages, so it's unlikely I'd need to look outside my sector.

No and I had to really keep refusing when UC were pushing me to do this kind of work. I absolutely could not do it due to sensory issues and my autism they wouldn’t have it. I was so relieved when I got my PIP and lcwra

I would and have as a student and again when money was tight. Unfortunately, I had to give up the second job as obviously I had to pay full tax, national insurance and additional student loan payments so I came out with about £6 an hour after travel costs which wasn’t worth the lack of family time and rushing about after my day job.

Treesnbirds · 06/08/2024 19:37

Carers ought to be paid more than bankers, their work is so much more important. I definitely think you should give it a go!

Flibflobflibflob · 06/08/2024 19:38

I would, a job is a job.
