Economic impact of Riots

Hi everyone,

I am a Muslim woman and I'm feeling incredibly vulnerable at the moment.

I had made a few plans over the summer - days out, a weekend city break, cinema trips, museums, picnics, bowling etc. However, I really don't feel like doing any of this at the moment. I feel safer at home and don't want to go into unknown cities/towns with my DCs incase we are subjected to racial abuse or get caught up in any trouble. Even hotels aren't safe places anymore.

I'm assuming a lot of ethnic minorities and even English people are wanting to stay away from this kind of trouble and will be rethinking plans.

What does everyone think will be the economic impact of all of this? A lot of smaller local businesses are going to suffer as a result I imagine, which is just so awful.

Also I forgot to mention the cost of all the repairs.

Not only that but the cost to a hugely underfunded police force of the loss of vehicles £80,000 a pop, over time, loss of officers going off sick and injured.

The damage to the streets and cost of clean up.

Cost of detaining the suspects and providing legal aid.
Cost of replacing all the officers uniforms and equipment damaged

Cost of the nhs to attend to all the injured officers and vet bills for the dogs which have been attacked / set on fire

It is huge

We will most likely be paying for all this damage for years to come. What a completely dire situation.

It will be grossly expensive to fix everything. Sadly a lot of the areas that have been destroyed have a lot of poverty & have been underfunded for years. I don’t think these places will fully recover and if they do it won’t be for many years. Unfortunately minus a basic clean up of the street I think many shops etc won’t be reopened especially small businesses making the economic state of this country even worse than it already is. I really feel for those who’ve had their homes and personal property destroyed, I have no clue if they’ll receive financial help or not.

Also sending love I also never thought I’d be so afraid to leave my house. Praying the riots end soon and those responsible will face full consequences.

@Mavan1984 sorry to hear that. Flowers Hope the bloody thuggery ends soon.

Coming from a family who have always traded as a small business i feel their pain. Life is hard as it is since Covid and with all this going on, some businesses won't be able to recover. Those who have inflicted harm to their own communities are the types that have nothing to lose but unfortunately the community that have been affected have a lot to lose. I'm sorry for the families that have lost their livelihoods and the locals that will be affected by these scums on the long run. I watched a clip of a guy whose cafe was torched and he was very sad and is thinking of moving and mentioned no business will ever come here to invest.

Mavan1984 · 06/08/2024 14:01

Yes I agree, this will absolutely devastate some communities. Not to mention, for safety reasons, a lot of people will avoid some of these areas for years to come. I'm Asian and don't think I will feel safe going to Southport any time soon.

I'm so sorry you feel this way. The whole situation is just so awful.
I need to pick up a new car tomorrow from one of the areas that have been heavily affected by the riots.
I will be travelling from London. I'm currently heavily pregnant, so feeling a bit vulnerable anyway.
My husband is really worried about me travelling alone and wants to come with me. However, he's Egyptian and I'm so worried for his safety. He has experienced racism in the past and it just breaks my heart.
I'm so grateful we don't live in an area that currently affected. It must be awful to live in fear daily. I dread to think of the cost of the 'clean up'. Like a previous poster pointed out it's going to affect so many different areas of the community.

It was estimated that the 2011 London riots ended up costing £500 million.

Makes me so sad that people are feeling anxious to do normal every day things.

I can totally understand you not wanting to take your husband. Is there anyone else you can take with you?

Completely understand op. I have the week off later this month and I had planned to use the time to go and do 2 mini breaks in different bits of the UK. I’m certainly not going to do that now - I’ll be staying in London where I feel safer and doing some things locally. I’m a Black woman who grew up in a very racist shit town where you’d regularly get slurs thrown at you back in the 90s and all the news is very triggering for me. So yes, on a very small level that’s less investment going into other areas of the country, and I’m sure many others feel the same.

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 15:13

Economic impact will be a lot - damage, tourism, police, court sessions, incarceration

Businesses hit and lost custom. There may not even be insurance coverage in some cases

Any impact on the pound

Basically avoid this it’s very damaging, and people feeling afraid
