Anyone broken/badly stubbed their little toe?

If you've done either, just wondering how others were, how long recovery took.

In my case, I have no idea what I did. Walking inside two weeks ago today, didn't stub my toe but felt like I did. Immediately had stabbing pains down the middle for a few hours. Within hours it was dark red, with a purple mark underneath and two dark purple spots on top. Had bruising above three toes. It's better but still dark pink and swollen. I can bend, but it doesn't like being touched and can't bear shoes/trainers.

I did this

Ran over it with a trolley

I didn't go to hospital/doctor etc, just bound it up

It still twinges occasionally now

coxesorangepippin · 05/08/2024 20:11

Recovery was about a month

It really hurt for about a week, hobbling, etc

I tripped going through the front door banged my little toe. I literally sailed through the air like a stunt woman in a film and landed at the other side of the hall at the bottom of the stairs... I didn't go to the doctors and had a purple toe for about a month!!

Broke my little toe on a hidden castor under the side of a hotel bed. We were en route to a cycling holiday at the time and I couldn’t get my regular shoes on let alone my cleats. Plenty ice on it, rest and elevation, and I was cycling again after 5 days. Couldn’t wear sandals for a bit longer as they pressed on it a bit. It healed completely after a few weeks and I’ve had no lingering after effects.

Oh poor you 🤕
I broke mine a few years ago and the first week was painful, luckily it was summer so I wore flip flops! I couldn’t drive for a few days as it hurt too much.
a month later it started to feel better

Snorrrring · 05/08/2024 20:21

I snapped mine in two - had to get it reset - took a very long time for it to feel normal - about 6 months mostly because you don't use it much so it doesn't get the physio it needs to recover.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 05/08/2024 20:21

Broke one of them twice and the other once, that was a bad one, was sticking out to the side. That one I bandaged to the toe next to it to pull it back into place.
The one i broke twice i taped to the toe next to it, kept them strapped for about 3 weeks, was sore for about a month.

Meant to have toes covered at work, can just about cope with my Earth Spirit shoes with holes for an hour or so, but have sneekily wearing my black flipflops most of the time. I felt able to drive about four days ago which is something.

I broke my middle toe walking into the stair bannister at night. It was obviously broken and pointing out in a different direction Confused. I went to A&E and they just strapped it. I was told they only use cast for the big toe. Painful and swollen for a few weeks, but got used to it quickly if I remember well.

Sunnyside4 · 05/08/2024 20:27

NeedthatFridayfeeling ouch - that sounds painful. I read they can do much unless it's badly broken, so haven't had mine checked - I do wonder if I've got a fracture though.

I split the bone in my little toe by catching it on a corner of skirting board - four toes went one way, the little went the other. Immediately very painful although I could walk and weight bear. I drove myself to A&E, they X rayed and a nurse splinted it to the fourth toe next to it.
Took 6 weeks to wear shoes again (luckily it was summer so lived in flip flops) and another 4 weeks or so after that to feel properly normal. Bone can take up to 12 weeks to heal depending on what you’ve done. Don’t rush it.

Corksoles · 05/08/2024 20:30

If it hurts strap it. That's all they'd do at A&E.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/08/2024 20:33

I broke mine as a teenager when I was chasing the cat (served me right, I guess). Bashed it into a chair leg. It was nearly healed then got broken again a couple of weeks later when a girl at school came running through a door. So that was nice. It has never been the same.

GP said A&E wouldn't care, and just told me to follow RICE protocols for a few days and then treat it gently.

I think it's about a month it takes to heal nicely, although I don't really know due to the aforementioned re-breaking!

Bax765 · 05/08/2024 20:40

I would strap it to the toe next to it, to ensure it heals straight.

I broke my toe and didn't realise it was broken so just left it, but it healed at an angle so I now have a wonky toe!

MzHz · 05/08/2024 20:44

Twice. Same toe 😳

first time it was last week of July and I couldn’t wear proper shoes until October

second time it barely hurt at all despite it being broken in August and I was back in shoes in a few weeks.

invest in decent flip flops!

I can highly recommend Archie’s 🥰

Devastated999 · 05/08/2024 20:48

I smashed the toe next to the little toe kicking a large rock. I didn’t go to hospital or strap it as the made it worse. I hobled for months and it is now stiffer than it was. It was swollen, black and blue, intensley painful, but wasn’t pointing in the wrong direction or an open fracture, so I didn’t think that there was any point getting it seen to.

It took 6 months to not hurt at all

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 06/08/2024 13:52

Strapping it definitely helps it heal better, i didn't strap my other foot and to toe has set slightly twisted and i get the odd ache in it, whereas the one i bandaged healed fine.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/08/2024 14:22

Little toes are notoriously very sore and take quite a while to heal when bashed. I dropped a box of frozen stew on my little toe and it was purple and black for about three months!
Make sure you're getting plenty of vitamins and minerals, that should speed up the healing process.
