Please help! Universal Credit Question

Is it worth my son claiming universal credit for the six weeks between college and university?

I thought he could stay on my claim until the end of August but I've found out it's July. We are really going to struggle.

Would he be expected to look for work? He is disabled but there's really no point going through all the paperwork and assessments for low capacity for work claim.

I know it takes five weeks to process a claim and he'll be cancelling it a week later when he goes to uni!

How many hoops would he have to jump through to get it? Is it worth it? Would he get it?

Thanks

It’s impossible to say just based off this info if he would get it, but if he does and doesn’t go for LCW or LCWRA then yes he would be expected to look for work.

Is it worth it really depends on how much the money is needed. If it was going to be his money for takeaways and cinema trips, it’s not worth the hassle for the sake of 6 weeks, if it’s money that is essential for rent/food, then it is probably worth trying.

Worth noting that if approved he could apply for an advance of UC if you really needed the money sooner, however if he’s going to cancel the claim he would then have to pay that advance back.

Thanks @Mrsttcno1 the need is probably a bit in between. We won't starve without it but I wasn't expecting it to end just yet so I'll need to juggle things.

He has ASD and wouldn't cope with the stress of a work coach interview so might be best to leave it.

I'm not sure what the case is for UC but on previous benefits you weren't allowed to claim until the start of the next school year.

Speaking from experience it's not worth jumping through their hoops for 6 weeks worth, which is awful I know

It seems different on UC as the child bit stops sooner in the summer

Without being rude how is he funding university? Will he be able to claim anything whilst he's there.
