Ideas for a weekend in Manchester with 90 year old in laws

As per the title really, later this month DH and I are taking DILs to Manchester for the weekend. FIL is a lifetime Man U fan and, as we live down south, he has never been. MIL and I are tagging along and making a weekend of it.

They were very active but have started to slow down a bit, so walking long distances isn’t really an option.

I’m just after any advice really of places we can go, things to do.

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Salford Quays if that makes any difference.

Thanks so much for any recommendations.

You’ve got the Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North right there.

I know he's a Man-U fan but the Ethiad stadium tour is great, also a river cruise down the quay in Salford is lovely when the weather is nice.
If they like a museum, you've got the Imperial War Museum at Salford Quays as well.

Is there anything in particular they like to do?

A potter round the grounds at Ordsall Hall?

Coronation street tour above link

Or the river cruise is good too

If you get a tram into deansgate from where you are there is a new national trust urban garden on the viaduct which is nice

The people's history museum is also good and is around 15min taxi from where your staying or a walk across from Salford Central Station

Due to their age - I’d stick in the vicinity of Man Utd. Do the tour there, potter round BBC building at Salford Quays. See Ordsall Hall. Go to the Imperial War museum.
You might be able to get support with visits to the Man U ground and war museum due to their age.

If you wanted to travel a little into greater-Manchester you could take them to the RHS gardens at Bridgewater - they are beautiful and very flat / good paths.

For eating - around the Lowry/BBC/war museum, there are plenty of places to eat. The Lowry theatre has a nice restaurant facing the water.
The Holiday Inn has a comfortable restaurant. There’s Nando’s and Pizza Express and various others.

Fabulous. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

I did look at the Coronation Street tour as well as they are big fans, and I think FIL would love the IWM, as I know he has been to the southern one.

If they are Corrie fans then this is a must. It's really good and not too long but you do have to book.

I suspect sadly that a Man City tour is the last thing a lifetime Man U fan would want (my dad would absolutely refuse this 🤣)

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 05/08/2024 16:44

If you have a car, you could drive over to Bury to ride on the East Lancs Railway to Ramsbottom for a pub lunch. PITA to get to from the quays on the tram though.

BigDahliaFan · 05/08/2024 16:48

The Midland Hotel is incredibly grand if you wanted to take them for afternoon tea - or just a drink if you are nearby.

There's a great food court called Cargo in the Lowry. Maybe twenty odd pop up restaurants. If he's doing the stadium tour check out meatiness tickets at the theatre. The Bridgewater gardens are lovely. There's lots of afternoon tea options too. The Midland or The Ivy.

The football museum is in town near Victoria station. Easy to get to on the tram from Salford quays

Haha, fair enough! My dad went there under severe duress from DS 😂there is the football museum at least as neutral ground lol
