Would you claim on insurance for £200?

Accidental damage in the home, high excess, which means we could only claim for £200. Would you bother when it means you will lose the no claims bonus?

No. It will cost more in the long run.

They would be more than likely to hike your premium next year, and if you shop around to find a cheaper one, you would have to disclose that you have had a claim.

Justsayit123 · 05/08/2024 12:02

No, Will see your premiums go up for the next few years. Not worth it

insuranceclaims · 05/08/2024 12:07

That's what I was thinking. The no claims bonus just feels like a scam so that people don't claim unless their house burns down!

No I wouldn’t for £200.

ForPearlViper · 05/08/2024 12:46

The no claims bonus is neither here nor there. Even if it is protected, all it does is maintain the no claims element of the calculation when your premium is renewed. There are many other elements of the premium calculation. One being whether you had a claim. So, even if your no claims bonus is maintained at the same level, your premium will probably still go up. Even if you tell them there was an incident but don't actually claim, it will still go on the record and your premium may still increase.

I haven't claimed for anything under £500, as I suspect that I'll just see it back in increased premiums.

Icanwalkintheroom · 05/08/2024 12:50

No I definitely wouldn’t.

Hayliebells · 05/08/2024 12:53

No way. I don't think I'd even claim £1k. My house insurance is expensive enough, and it's for things like the house burning down or a significant burglary imo. Claiming a small amount would be self defeating, the insurance company would more than get that back in increased premiums.

TwistedSisters · 05/08/2024 12:55

Wouldn't even cross my mind ...£200 is just one of those costs when maintaining a house.

insuranceclaims · 05/08/2024 12:57

Thanks everyone.

Agreed on the no (I am in the industry). Insurance is for big losses. The small losses are only really designed to be claimed for alongside accompanying big losses or the numbers just don't add up. A claim will be rated into your premium for 5 years from claiming.

Normallynumb · 05/08/2024 13:29

No it will cost you more in the long run

Scottishshortbread11877 · 05/08/2024 13:32

Would not even consider it, that's madness !

Moveoverdarlin · 05/08/2024 13:35

Nope. What’s £200 nowadays? Weekly shop and fill the car with petrol. I’d just take the hit.
