I'm 38 and haven't had a job since my last job went into administration a few months ago.
I love working
I love meeting people and once I have the job I'm fine
I just can't get a job because I go to bits in the interviews

I have a interview today for a hotel administrator and I'm terrified
I have done research on hotel,I know the restaurants and how many guest rooms they have, the price of weddings etc
I have wrote down typical questions using the star method BUT
I will get there and forget everything
My hands shake,my voice trembles and I honestly feel like crying.
I can't cope with the pressure
I know I can do the job
I know I would be good at it
I just can't pass interviews because of my stupid anxiety

Can anyone give me advice
My interview is at 2pm this afternoon
I really want this job
It's a 8 min commute and decent money (for the role )
How do I fake it ?

Get a piece of paper and write down 3 questions.

When they say “any questions”, get it out and ask them, or if they’ve already answered them, look at your paper and say, “I did have these 3 questions, but you’ve been very thorough and answered them already, thank you”.

Take in a very small notepad with you. My company I work for (large emergency services) encourages people to take notes in as they want to get the best from you. I took a sheet in with some notes, and just knowing they were there was comforting and then I didn't need them.

I also read of doing the Wonder Woman pose. Stand in front of a mirror, hands on hips, and say to yourself out loud I am the best person for this job, and lots of positive things. As soon as a negative thought creeps in, push it out with something positive.

Try and get a temp job via an agency and take from there

This is one of those things where the more you do it the easier it gets. If this one doesn't work out - though the answer you gave above is very good - then I wonder if it might be worth applying for some jobs you aren't fussed about and treating any interviews you get as practice? I decided the interview for my current job was a practice run before I got properly stuck into job hunting, and they offered me the job - so I can confirm giving yourself a reason not to be stressed out about it works!

I've also done interviewing and can confirm I'm interested in good, well considered answers rather than quick responses. It's ok to take a moment to think, and if you find yourself drifting from what you think they were getting at it's ok to ask them to repeat the question. Unless they're an arsehole the interviewer wants you to do your best, and if they're an arsehole then you don't want to work there anyway.

Remember, an interview is for you to decide if you want to work there just as much as for them to decide if they want to hire you. Have some good questions prepared, that show you've been thinking what it would be like doing the job. The Ask A Manager blog is really good for this.

Just outside now waiting to go in
Deep breaths and telling myself positive thoughts
And a hour from now it will be over ha ha

Tell them you are confident in the workplace but nervous at interviewing so you have brought in your notes with you. Good luck!

strawberry12345 · 05/08/2024 13:45

Good luck!

ScottBakula · 05/08/2024 14:02

I guess this is a bit late since uou are 3 mins away from your interview but as pp have said your example answer is fine.
Taking a few notes in with you is always a good idea
Tell them you are nervous, any decent person will try to put you at ease.
If they ask about your achievements, remember it doesn't just have to be work ones it can be ones from your personal life too.

Good luck , let us know how it went .

whydoesitalwaysrainoe · 05/08/2024 14:09

I'm out it was short and sweet
She said she has others to interview and if I pass the first stage I will get another interview to meet with the manager
Seems like such a long process but I think I did okay
We will see anyway

Hope you get to the next stage OP. One tip I find useful is to remember that you are interviewing them (to see if you want the job) as much as they are interviewing you. That evens out the power dynamic so I feel more confident.

Pretend your Simone Biles and just OWN IT

whydoesitalwaysrainoe · 05/08/2024 14:34

Thankyou
I was suprised when she said there was a second interview
At the end she double checked my phone number and took my email address so I couldn't of been a total write off ha ha

2nd interviews ( and 3rd ) are quite common.
It's a good thing it means they are interested in you but probably have quite a few more to interview .
If you think you will be nervous again take one of the above suggestions but don't over do it.
Try to think of a few more questions .
Was there anything you want clarification on or more detail

whydoesitalwaysrainoe · 05/08/2024 18:40

She said they had 10 more people to interview so not hopefully really
It's so mentally exhausting trying to find a new job
It's got to happen eventually tho surely

Years ago I was told to imagine interviewers in their underwear presumably to make you realise they are just ordinary people.
also try to see it like a two way conversation.
good luck with the next round!

Sprig1 · 05/08/2024 19:13

It sounds like you did brilliantly today. Well done. I am sure that even if you don't get this one that it won't be long until you are successful.

Attictroll · 05/08/2024 19:32

Well done getting through it and reaching out to get help. If you don't get anywhere now think of this one as practice...onwards and upwards 😊

runningonberocca · 05/08/2024 19:44

I’ve been on lots of interview panels and they really just want to meet someone who they would like to work with!
Be yourself - if you are nervous it’s ok to say you are nervous as that shows you really want the job. It’s ok to ask them to repeat questions or to gather your thoughts before answering.
A few years ago when I was being interviewed for a really good promotion I was really nervous. Panel of 8 people interviewing me . One of the questions stumped me and I just started laughing and said “ gosh that’s an awful question who thought up that one” . They laughed . I thought o had massively screwed it up. Then I got a phone call to say I had been successful- I was so shocked but the director told me that I had “ come across as really human and genuine and not a lot of rehearsed answers’

So tell them about you. Talk to them about how much you would like to work there, why you would be a good reliable colleague to have.

Best of luck - I hope you ace it

Oh sorry - didn’t read the full thread! Well done for getting through it. Fingers crossed for you

PorcupinesAreSpiky · 05/08/2024 19:50

Well done for getting through today-it sounds like you did well which will hopefully give you confidence for other interviews. 🤞that you get through to the next round.
