How many times per year is normal to go on holiday?

By holiday I mean either abroad or within the UK it doesn’t matter.

I'd say that's entirely dependent upon your circumstances.

We go away three times - once abroad, twice in the UK but in the past when we had less disposable income we probably went once every two years.

skippy67 · 04/08/2024 14:54

There is no "normal". As well you know.

FuzzyPuffling · 04/08/2024 14:56

I haven't been on holiday for 11 years through a combination of multiple redundancies, DH having cancer needing years of treatment and me being his carer. Is that normal? It is for us. No one size fits all.

Malahide · 04/08/2024 14:58

There is no normal. It quite obviously depends on disposable income which differs between every family.

Our ‘normal’ used to be one ‘big’ summer holiday per year and then a shorter UK/Europe break. Nowadays with cost of living we’d be lucky to get any holiday whatsoever..

Happytimes123456 · 04/08/2024 14:58

I would probably say 'normal' in my friendship group is one abroad holiday per year.

LarrysNewOwner · 04/08/2024 14:59

Are we counting single nights? Weekends away? Day trips abroad? Staying with family?

MuthaHubbard · 04/08/2024 14:59

By the end of this year, I will have been abroad on holiday 5 times but usually it's twice abroad - one city type break and on relax in the sun one with the odd UK weekend away.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/08/2024 14:59

I guess broadly speaking, one summer holiday a year (whether home or abroad) is probably most common. Some people go away every five minutes if fb is anything to go by.

🌸 for @FuzzyPuffling

IamSmarticus · 04/08/2024 15:01

There is no normal, as can be seen from the virtually identical thread a couple of days ago. Some don't have any holidays, some have a couple of weeks away each year and others seem to be abroad more often than they are at home.

ASBONEIGHBOURS · 04/08/2024 15:04

When the kids were small we would have had a big holiday abroad in the summer and a smaller break in UK either half term or Easter. Now that we have teens we have 1 or 2 family holidays usually abroad 1 holiday just us and we each go away with friends separately for a short break. It probably seems a lot but it's what we save and spend our money on. No fancy cars or gadgets, no new mobile phones and we rarely eat out or get take aways when at home

MaltipooMama · 04/08/2024 15:24

I like to do one holiday abroad (although last year was two), plus a couple of UK breaks. Last year we did Lanzarote, Prague, and two Wales holidays, and this year has been Majorca, Wales and the Forest of Dean, and we plan to do a final UK holiday in September. My eight month old so far has been on more holidays than I did in my first 14 years 😂

Beth216 · 04/08/2024 15:27

I think 1 or 2 is probably normal, but we have an 'abnormal' amount now our mortgage is paid off.

This.🤔

We never go on "holiday" but have mini-breaks (normally 2-3 nights but sometimes just a 1-nighter) anything from 15-30 times a year.

snowballsintheoven · 04/08/2024 15:32

We have 5 abroad holidays per year

We are very fortunate but do make a point of prioritising holidays

Ojjjjnv · 04/08/2024 15:33

We usually go away three times a year- a week at Christmas, one at Easter and two in the summer. But we often don't spend crazy amounts when we are there. So usually self catering, cheap ish airbnb, sharing with friends......

Doyouthinktheyknow · 04/08/2024 15:37

No normal.

I’ve had no holiday, 1 week in the UK, all the way up to this year with 4 cruises and at least 2 weekend breaks!

We are older now, dses grown and we can afford to spend much more.

Izzynohopanda · 04/08/2024 15:38

One ‘big’ holiday, and maybe a few weekends away, plus maybe a second ‘smaller’ ( ie uk/cheaper) holiday.

CLEO42 · 04/08/2024 15:45

We ‘normally’ have 2-3 weeks overseas holiday in the school summer holidays, plus a week in UK cottage in May half term, a long weekend with friends usually around June and a hotel weekend (UK) in Dec. If we can stretch to it we sometimes have a European city break at Easter as well. We prioritise our finances to have as many trips as possible

2AND2GC · 04/08/2024 15:52

Normal for us (fifties, empty-nesters) is to go abroad twice.

Something like EITHER:

One 'big' February winter sun holiday (eg all-inclusive St Barts 10 days) AND one September city break (eg Florence 4 days)

OR:

One week in early summer (eg hotel in Kefalonia) AND one week in late summer (eg apartment in Ibiza)

... PLUS a family long weekend with all our adult children in an Airbnb in the UK.

PLUS several weekend visits to our kids throughout the year with treats and meals out. We treat these as mini-holidays.
