Why do you sunbathe - honestly ?

Genuine question so please don't judge me. I'm not racist so please don't think that but am truly intrigued as to the reasons for sunbathing.
Just returned from turkey which was really really hot! I'm pale skinned and do feel better for a tan. So I alternated between staying in the shade, the pool and the sun, determined to get some colour. But it was uncomfortably hot.
Lots of people stayed in in the shade understandably. But there were non-white people in the sun.
If you already have tanned skin, why do you stick it out in the sun ?

I'm also just back from Turkey and spent my time in the pool and shade I can't lie in the sun. I burn badly as well so always have factor 30 or 50 on. I would love to be able to lie in the sun all day getting a nice tan but unfortunately my skin just can't take it so I do what I can to keep safe. A couple of nights ago in the lift up to room a group of Asian women were laughing amongst themselves about how pale I am and how I need to go for sunbeds 🙃

People of colour do not sunbathe. We don't like to be in the sun. We don't like to get darker. Fairer skin is idolised.

Thank you @Differentstarts and @Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong

I wouldn't have known about skin from a cut either.
In all fairness I thought I could tolerate the heat quite well, but evidently some people can stand it a lot more than me!

I do agree that I feel so much better for being in the sun.

I don’t have tanned skin, I’m Asian, my skin is naturally brown, it is not tanned.

All cuts are pink when skin heals, it just isn’t as noticable on paler skin tones. A cut is healed in a rush, your body focues on closing the cut first, rather than producing good quality skin, that happens later.

Nat4819 · 03/08/2024 17:38

@NCTDN So you agree that you feel much better after being in the sun but you can't understand why anyone of colour would want to feel the same? It was hard to understand the reasoning behind your original post but this makes it even worse.

Gosh they really must have been at the pinnacle of dermatology to know that!

Yet there are so many people who don't actually know that. So perhaps save your twatty sarcasm for another day. 🙄

sunsetsandboardwalks · 03/08/2024 19:43

I love the feeling of sitting out in the sun - the only reason I don't do it more is because I worry too much about skin cancer. I work outdoors as it is, so I don't really need any more sun exposure on top. The heat doesn't really come into it for me either way.

I wear Factor 50 at work and go for a mole check once a year. I've only burned a couple of times in my life (and never badly) but I do tan even with cream. Wearing too many layers gives me a headache and sweat rash so I just cover myself in cream and hope for the best.

You can’t speak for all people of colour and shouldn’t make a sweeping statement like that. I like to sunbathe, I love to be in the sun and I don’t idolise fair skin

Agree. I know plenty of people who think there is zero risk of cancer as long as you don’t burn.

singleandfree · 03/08/2024 20:36

I sunbathe when im at the beach because i can and i will i have no children to keep an eye on so i will soke up the sun in peace.

bimblingabout · 03/08/2024 20:39

I think some people are just a lot more comfortable in hot sun. I'm not. I can burn and get sun/heat rashes. So I wear a hat and cover up in long floaty dresses. My favourite place is the shade on a hot day. Some people are better adapted than me. There again I'm happy in colder climates. Swings and roundabouts.

MonsteraMama · 03/08/2024 20:42

I'm as white as it gets (so white that as a teen I used to have to mix white SFX makeup with the lightest shade of foundation I could find to get my shade), I wear the highest factor sun cream I can get my mitts on all year round, and I have never in my life had or wanted to have a tan. I will still bask in the sun like a reptile because I just love the warmth.

PizzaWithHummus · 03/08/2024 20:48

I am dealing with skin cancer at the moment and like monstera I just like the warmth it just improves my mood and makes me feel better even completely slathered up in spf and covered up and only for a short time.

Flibflobflibflob · 03/08/2024 20:54

I like my dark skinned daughter to make vitamin D plus she looks fabulous with more of a tan, like she’s been living on an island somewhere, she goes a lovely dark golden colour. My dark skinned husband just loves the feel of the sun on his skin. Seems reasonable to me. I don’t like it that much, I tend to burn (also dark skinned but clearly the sun is not my friend). However my chubby legs will be out because they could do with some colour and looking a bit ashy.

I imagine the same sorts of reasons other people like to lie in the sun. Some of us don’t mind getting darker 🙄.

merrymelodies · 03/08/2024 20:56

Getting baked by the sun and then diving in a cool body of water for a swim is heavenly. The blissful sensation of cool water on hot skin! Not cold water, mind. This being said, I never expose my skin to sunlight during the spring/summer months without sunscreen.

MollyMoonshine · 03/08/2024 14:11

A top dermatologist once told me that a suntan is simply a sign that your skin has been damaged.

That's not true. Some people with olive skin don't even have to look at the sun and they tan. It depends.

Hadjab · 03/08/2024 23:39

NCTDN · 03/08/2024 14:05

I knew it might sound like that and am certainly not racist. I do really mean, why do people of colour sunbathe ?
It was incredibly hard work imo and not pleasant. But like others on here, for me, tanned fat is more pleasing than white fatGrinGrin That's my incentive to endure the heat (whilst wearing factor 50).
But if your skin is already tanned, why endure it?

WTF 🙄

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 03/08/2024 16:01

I agree, I never knew anyone of darker skin growing up, i grew up in a place with zero diversity in terms of race and religion. I had never met a Protestant or a Muslim either fwiw.

Recently a child neighbour who is very dark skinned, an African immigrant had a deep cut and I was surprised to see the skin regrowth was pink and stayed pink for a while until eventually a brown layer grew. I thought it would be brown throughout and asked a friend if everybody white knew this, was i just being foolish or ignorant. It was news to her too. But if I had asked my black colleague at work about her skin it could be perceived as being racist so I was afraid to ask. I also now want to know how you can see a bruise on dark skin so if anyone can help me with that I'd appreciate it!!

Interested to know what your colleague’s response was…
