Motility Cars

Anyone have any experience of this please? I've only just been awarded the necessary to investigate but I am finding it a LOT of information.

We've spoken to a few dealers and test drive a car yesterday however I am not notorious for making good choices.

I am worried about making the wrong choice.

There are options for vehicles which will insure <25yr olds which would be great (dependent on size of engine). We have 3 DC, two of driving age.

There are options to get a bigger family car with a non returnable down payment - we confirmed with the garage yesterday, if something happens to be during the 3yrs - that money is not returned when the car is etc It's considered the down payment for the vehicle (fair enough, it's a great scheme and we're not complaining) so if I pass within the duration, DH has to hand back the car and looses the cash.

My head is burst and I'd be grateful for any advice from those already using the scheme.

Also, take your time and shop around - lots of dealerships have special deals on one particular car so there isn’t a huge down-payment one month when there would be on the same car a month or so later. My mum had two Mercedes A Class motability cars with no deposit.

Hi - hoping for a reply, although it's a year later!

I'm trying to get my head round the motability scheme and would love an A class - how did you mum manage to get a deal on the A Class?
When you say dealerships - did you go to Mercedes directly? Can you haggle them there? How long ago was it?

They are not currently on the scheme but I'm hoping to see them on the new price list for October

@WolfFoxHare while I am currently stable, I have terminal cancer so it's always a consideration and while I am trying to live life to the full, I do so sigh the well being of my family in mind.

If the lease ends early, ie you die, I believe you do get a pro rata amount back of the advance payment. I’m 18 months in to my first notability car. I can’t imagine not having one now. It’s awesome.

There will be a list of garages that do mobility cars We are on our second mobility car and haven't had to pay a deposit
Neither have Been a Mercedes though! They will have certain deals if you are looking for a specific make it's likely you will have to pay a deposit although it looks like the pp mother struck lucky so you never know.

You mentioned insuring your kids on it.

Mobility cars can only be used for the befefit of the disabled person.
They do not need to be in the vehicle all the time, but it must be for their benefit, e.g picking up a prescription, getting shopping, taking to appointments or visiting family, etc

Your kids couldn't use it to go to work, college, see their friends, etc, so you'd likely need to keep the two vehicles.

Anyone who cannot afford the advance payment, or adaptions to the vehicle, please consider applying to the grants department.
I've had a grant of varying sizes off most vehicles (20 yrs on scheme). Might be a 3+ month wait.

You'll need to show payslips, bank statements, etc. Then a field officer will bring the car to you and make sure you are suitable for the car you chose (can you open the tail gate, the door? The car low enough? Can you lift your wheelchair in and out?)
They will problem solve and suggest adaptations, then put this to the grants team.

If you have paid carers through social services, you may be eligible for an open insurance policy so anyone can drive the car, not just two named drivers.

This is a zombie thread
@MissRose28
The OP had or has terminal cancer so it’s probably unwise to bring back a zombie thread in these circumstances

ChocoChocoLatte · 19/08/2025 07:27

@Cannongooseam thankfully still alive and kicking and very much enjoying my motability car - thank you though Smile

Fantastic OP! So glad yo hear. I hope all is well with you.

just thought it may not be something you’d want to be dealing with currently for whatever reason!
I have a Motability car which is why I was reading the thread when I realised it was from last year.
