Taking two year old to a Sondheim musical

It's based on fairy tales, which he has so e understanding of and liking for. It's also fringe, but folks are paying £16 for tickets. Was thinking of going and then one of us can take him out of he decides to climb on stage or shout at the wolf or whatever. It could be magical? Or not?

Is it "Into the Woods"?

theotherfossilsister · 02/08/2024 17:49

Yes!

Please don't. Unless it is specifically aimed at kids that young then don't be those parents. He won't enjoy it as he won't sit still for that long and never mind how quiet you think he is managing to be he will not be being actually quiet. Wait until he is older can actually enjoy it and not ruin it for everyone else.

fortheveryfirsttime · 02/08/2024 17:52

No. They're two, take them to a children's theatre performance if you want but don't irritate everyone else with your toddler who won't want to sit still and won't understand what's happening.

Ponkpinkpink15 · 02/08/2024 17:53

Fringe, only £16 a ticket, 2 of you going, if I thought he'd enjoy it I'd take him, & be prepared to take him out immediately if he showed any sign of spoiling it for anyone else.

mrwalkensir · 02/08/2024 17:53

At £16/ticket, I'd definitely give it a go! At that age our youngest was massively into Ziggy Stardust.

theotherfossilsister · 02/08/2024 17:53

We would take him out if disruptive?

What age can someone enjoy Into the Woods? The tagline is 'children will listen '

Procrastinates · 02/08/2024 17:53

You'd be bloody bonkers to do that it's almost 3 hours long and is suitable for ages 5+

mrwalkensir · 02/08/2024 17:54

OP has said they'll take them out if they're disruptive...

Namechanger385u4p · 02/08/2024 17:55

Into the woods isnt a young child play, more 6+

You want Peppa Pig the live show or similar

beetr00 · 02/08/2024 17:55

it has a 2.45 running time @theotherfossilsister suggested 5+ suitability

There are two productions this festival, are we looking at same one?

But if he's already kicked off and disrupted people then you again 'disrupt' when removing him.... I'd be pissed off tbh

OP has said they'll take them out if they're disruptive...

But at that point he's already disrupted!

MerelyPlaying · 02/08/2024 17:58

Umm - I love Sondheim, but while ‘Into the Woods’ is based on fairy tales it’s not really for children -it is quite dark. It’s not so much whether you’re prepared to take him out, it’s whether he will really enjoy any of it. The songs aren’t nursery rhymes.

Up to you, for £16 a ticket you’re not losing much, but you might as well take him to see Macbeth or King Lear for all he’ll get out of it.

Yes but by that point they have already disrupted those around them. It's better to wait until they are older.

My partner went to see Little Night Music starring Judy Dench at the National when he was seven with his parents and loved it and it's one of his treasured childhood memories

I can see two the second option sounds even worse as despite being shorter it's aimed at 8+?

Which one are you looking at to think it would be appropriate for a 2 year old?

Warmfeet · 02/08/2024 17:59

If you don't take him he won't miss it. If you do take him he'll probably be wriggly for at least some, will want to talk to you at normal volume through some of it, he may get scared and you will be stressed trying to stop him from disturbing people.

Just walk round the street artists instead.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 02/08/2024 18:00

Into the Woods is a very long musical. It also has a very dark storyline. It's nothing like a collection of fairy stories that a child would enjoy.

And when I say long, the production I saw started at 7.30pm and didn't finish until 10.45pm.

[not the point of the thread, but it was brilliant and I'd recommend for people much older than two]

jellybe · 02/08/2024 18:00

7 and 2 are very different ages. All my kids love the theatre but we don't take them until they were 7 minimum for productions not aimed at kids as we didn't want to be the ones ruining the theatre experience for others. Seriously just wait a few years there will be other productions of into the woods.

Seven is not two.

7 and 2 are in no way comparable... Hmm
