If could have any kind of help within the household, what would it be?

I am at the end of my career in its current form - a combination of aging out and too much travel. I have been pondering what’s next, and have been thinking…

I had a relative who was in a very controlling relationship and, when she died, the controller completely moved himself into her property until he was legally escorted out. I wasn’t working at the time, so went and sorted out the house. I cannot describe the state of the place but, steadily I cleared it all sorted everything out. And I realize now that that was a really fulfilling task. So I am thinking about offering household services going forward.

Any form of ‘household management’, from decluttering to downsizing to respectful packing up houses of deceased loved ones. I would also offer services such as shopping and putting it all away, bed linen changes and perhaps even helping people go out to do their chores. Maybe even a meal service where is would deliver meals on maybe. Monday and a Friday that just need chucking in the oven.

But - talking wish list - what services would people like in their homes to make life easier? I appreciate this is very much a luxury for most, just looking for ideas…

Batch cooking bog standard meals like lasagne!
not general cleaning but a spring clean where things like wiping all the skirting boards gets done!
organising documents

Gazelda · 02/08/2024 20:15

Sorting my photos and making them up into photo books.

Organising my grandparents' photo slides.

Insurance and utility comparisons.

Batch cooking.

Putting the shopping delivery away when it arrives from Tesco.

Home made delicious meals.
Ironing.

i Would happily pay someone to:

  • unpack the car etc after a holiday
  • do the evening tidying / washing up while we’re putting kids to bed just for a night
  • go through the sock pile and find all the pairs and chuck the rest
  • sort out and take away the charity shop pile
LindorDoubleChoc · 02/08/2024 20:19

I'd go for a private chef.

Taxis are rather expensive for elderly on a limited budget so a lift to appointments at hospitals or doctors would be beneficial if cheaper

Friendofdennis · 02/08/2024 20:34

Someone to help empty out the garage and take things to tip and charity shop. It is so important that you don’t make the person feel judged for being disorganised or untidy though

The only chore I hate doing and struggle with is folding and putting away laundry! I will sort stuff into piles on the bed....get distracted bored and go do something else. Go up to bed later and end up chucking it all back on the floor in the basket!

I would love to have someone on call to put together flat pack furniture. I'm currently looking down the barrel at having to assemble two chests of drawers that are, apparently, a two-man job. With only one-man me.

Task rabbit!!! I used them for an ikea job and the guy gave me his number and I get him to do all the DIY jobs I can't do, at a much cheaper rate!

Onekidnoclue · 02/08/2024 20:54

On the decluttering side I think there’s a business for people who want things sold. My mother has loads of tat and old clothes and wants them sold but isn’t tech savvy enough to put them on vinted etc.

Anjo2011 · 02/08/2024 20:57
  • post holiday washing and ironing
  • decluttering help, including taking to charity shop and selling on eBay/vinted (would happily share the profits)
  • spring cleaning , windows, curtains, skirting boards
  • sorting children’s clothes including school uniform

I w just used TaskRabbit for the first time recently - I had 2 different 'assemblers' putting together flat packed stuff - they were great!
But I am really annoyed that I am just so rubbish at this sort of practical stuff!

These are amazing, thank you!

This would be my dream job!! I’ve just ordered some furniture for DD’s room because I love building it she needs the space.

Proper decluttering and taking it away to dispose of properly. I just end up with heaps to be ebayed, to go to charity shop, to be recycled and it never leaves the house.

Note that you couldn't take stuff to a council tip as part of your business - or at least shouldn't.

There is something like that round here, it’s a mini bus service to the local hospital but they collect from the door step. It’s over 65s and bookable 48 hours in advance, absolute godsend for my parents

I’m in Kent, near Tunbridge Wells. I wouldn’t even want paying, just a few brews! x

Trinity69 · 02/08/2024 22:18

I would happily pay someone to come in and change the beds weekly. Nothing is better than clean sheet night but it doesn’t happen as often as it should because I hate doing it.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 02/08/2024 22:30

Not yet mentioned, I want someone to organize my pantry and clothes closet.
Like influencers organize bins/labels color coordinated etc.

tsalty · 02/08/2024 22:47

It seems decluttering, organizing and sorting for the win!

beds is a big one…
