Anyone had their tubes tied?

Popping this in chat for a bit of extra traffic.

I had an appointment with my consultant yesterday (28w pregnant) and when talking about my upcoming c-section she mentioned the possibility of having my tubes tied during the section.

It honestly took me a bit by surprise as I'd never really considered it before, so just looking for experiences from anyone who has had their tubes tied (during a section or not) and whether it's something they would recommend.

I'm 35 and DH is closing on 40. This is our second child and it's a definite no to anymore (both from a no more children perspective and this pregnancy has been rubbish so I'm not doing another one!)

So it makes sense from a contraceptive point of view. I can't take most hormonal contraceptive anyway due to BMI and having migraines and the copper coil was horrific when I tried it a decade ago.

But it does seem very final and really grown up (in a way that marriage, house and 2 kids doesn't!!)

I had mine done six months after elcs rather than during the c section. The failure rate is higher if it is done during a c section because the fallopian tubes are swollen during pregnancy and there is a higher chance of the tubes re-joining. If a pregnancy does occur, it is more likely to be ectopic which is high risk to the mother's health. It is obviously more convenient to just have one op (and cheaper for nhs) but look into the risks.

I was very clear about dc2 being our last so had no problems about the concept of having permanent birth control.

I had mine done during c section at my request, no problems at all, normal recovery ect. Just a bit more emotional as it was like this is absolutely my last baby but it was the right decision x

I had mine done during my C Section, it added probably 15 mins of time to the whole procedure. 13 months later and we still believe it was the BEST DECISION EVER.
It was my fourth child though!

Following. I might ask for this when I deliver my twins - 3rd and 4th and I’ll be 35 when they’re born. Definitely don’t want anymore!

Yes I had it done at 29, no regrets. My periods are heavier and more painful since, though. I've never had confirmation that it was down to this but it's something to consider.

PencilsInSpace · 02/08/2024 10:49

I had mine done after 2 DC but not during CS. A couple of decades later I have no regrets. It was great just not having to think about contraception ever again and it sort of helped me focus my life knowing that I would never have another baby.

It's any potential affect on periods that worries me a bit. I have heavy and painful periods anyway so heavier and painful doesn't sound like fun!

I had my tubes tied last year during surgery and I thought it also felt like a really grown up decision haha.

I'm usually an always broody, never say never type but I had a really hard time of it raising the kids I have.

So I would hate to either be in that position again or have my 2 kids see me raise another child potentially better than I did them. The only true reason I would have wanted another pregnancy (not baby) is because I never experienced labour or a natural child birth which I still hate but it's not guaranteed and not a reason to bring a child into the world.

And ultimately, I accepted, I would be okay with adoption or fostering if I really felt like I needed to raise a child again.

Had tubal ligation at age 38 after two sons. I think my periods got heavier x

For me personally, knowing I won't get pregnant again is worth it as I couldn't put my body through a 5th c section. If you already have bad periods you might not notice much difference. Mine were always bad until I started having children, but since I got sterilised they've gone bad again. It's manageable with prescription painkillers so I just make sure I'm ready for that stage of the month.

PencilsInSpace · 02/08/2024 11:06

My periods didn't get heavier or more painful. I did have an earlyish menopause though and I don't know if there's a link.

Floralnomad · 02/08/2024 11:10

I had a sterilisation about 18 months after my ELCS , it was really painful having it done laparoscopically as they fill you up with gas so given the choice I’d go for doing it at the same time as presumably they can already get to where they need to be whilst you are open . If they still need to fill you with gas I wouldn’t do it at the same time . I found the sterilisation more painful to recover from than the section .

Floralnomad · 02/08/2024 11:11

It did make my periods heavier so I had a mirena fitted but I didn’t have an early menopause.

Farcry66 · 02/08/2024 11:16

I had mine done 8 months ago during my c-section. I was 42, 3rd pregnancy, 3rd C-section, so it was the right decision. I dint want another pregnancy, it was bloody hard work at my age. But, I still get pangs of, oh, wouldn't it be nice! I did have very much a sense of making a decision that would end something significant, I didn't make my mind up fully until the morning of the operation!

Other than that, recovery was incredibly smooth. I do think there is a big difference in my periods, heavier for sure, but I don't know if that's because I had tubes done or because of pregnancy

WhatToDoNowEh · 02/08/2024 11:18

Had it done six months ago - recovery longer than expected but I don’t think you would notice after a section
periods exactly the same
no regrets

Guppyforyourthoughts · 02/08/2024 12:34

I had mine done when I was 30 during my 3rd section after terrible pregnancies, a lifetime of migraines and just generally being sick of hormonal contraception. My husband was actually on the waiting list for a vasectomy but we had moved areas and he hadn't got around to registering with the new g.p.

The recovery was as easy as previous sections, my periods didn't change. It's been wonderful never having to ever think about contraception or pregnancy ever again. I am 47 now and my periods are still as regular as ever so I haven't had an early menopause. I got very slightly broody around 38 and just felt a sense of relief that I couldn't change my mind.

I wouldn't have put my self through an extra operation if I hadn't have been having a section anyway, but I didn't see the point of putting my husband through a procedure when I was already on the table.

I had my tubes tied 48 years ago at the age of 22. I had just had my 3rd baby in 2 and a half years and definitely didn’t want any more . I had spoken about it with my consultant during my pregnancy and he agreed that it was the best option for me and it was done 3 days after the birth . 48 years later I know that it was a great decision.
