Get rid of sunscreen stains on white t shirt

My favourite and best white t shirt has a lovely ring of yellow on the neckline, which I can only assume are sunscreen stains. Can I please have your very best tricks for getting rid of them? It was line-dried yesterday so my usual stain remover of just sunlight doesn't seem to be cutting it.

I have literally no idea, im hoping someone has ideas too as I can never get suncream stains out!

There is no way. I ruined a favourite white shirt on holiday last year. I asked mn for tips.i did them all.
I washed, I left in bright sunlight, I bleached, I washed etc etc
It was a complete waste of time.
P45 sunscreen was the culprit. It had been a few years since I had been abroad and I had forgotten it does it.

Ive tried everything too. I even bought that fast out stuff and it cost me over £20 with delivery and it didn't work either 😭

Maybe some brands are worse than others but so far I've found it impossible to get out!

Oh bugger. This is annoying!

Sorry, but it's a goner. I don't think there's anyway of getting sunscreen stains out. I have tried everything I could think of with no luck.

@StrangewaysHereWeCome
Elbow grease spray , sprayed liberally on (any) mark/stain leave for ten mins, blot with kitchen roll clean cloth. Spray again wash on a cool wash
Fingers crossed

Soak in white vinegar and sodium bicarbonate over night (it stinks) then wash using detergent on as as hot a temperature that the garment will take

Nothing has ever worked for me. I only buy anything white if I consider it one season only or only wear in the evening. It doesn't really suit me but a fresh white cotton top is irresistible sometimes.

Elbow Grease. My partners white t-shirts were pretty bad around the collar and I skooshed that, added in a Dr Beckmann white sachet into the wash along with a scoop of super concentrate vanish powder then dried on the line in the sun. Not completely gone but a lot better. Will be more liberal with the Elbow Grease next time. Love the stuff.

Have you tried applying dishwasher rinse aid, leaving overnight then washing as normal?

goldsequin · 02/08/2024 19:07

I’ve never found a way and with the DC having white school shirts have discovered that prevention is better than cure. I put suncream on and let it dry completely before they put their shirts on - they don’t get stained if you let it dry completely first (we use 8hr suncream so no need to reapply).

Fairy liquid!
Put on sunscreen stain, soak for a while then wash as normal. Works well!!

This I what I have used and it works, only thing I would add is that soak it in cold water and add a couple of tablespoons of salt. I did on my favourite white t-shirt that had been in the back of the wardrobe for months with sun cream that wouldn't come out.
It looks brand new now!

Sunshine......not that we get much lol.

So, put your whites out on the line BEFORE you wash them (not a completely essential step but I definitely see better results this way), leave for a good few hours. Then wash as normal and hang back out on the line. Leave them out as long as possible, way past dry. The sun WILL bleach the stain out. I also find napisan gets all sorts of stains out of white clothing, even at 30deg.

But I'm going to say it again. Sunshine sunshine sunshine 😁

If it’s that reddish, rust-like stain from sunscreen, the answer is a mixture of lemon juice and washing up liquid, equal proportions. Rub it into the stain and it will fade and then you can wash as normal. Obviously, check colour fastness if it’s a coloured item. I wasted a lot of money on expensive rust remover solution that didn’t work as well as this until I found this advice.
