Endometrial ablation - pain?

Stretch · 01/08/2024 21:40

Hi all

I’m having an Endometrial Ablation next week under GA, with a Mirena coil fitted at the same time for heavy bleeding purposes. Have been told I have a couple of tiny fibroids.

My question is how much pain will I be in after? 4 days after the procedure we are packing up a house and having to drive 2 hours each way in a car. 🫣 Wondering if this is not going to be feasible.

All the information just says cramping and bleeding for a few days, but I know this will vary for different people and seems very vague.

I had a hysteroscopy and D&C biopsy last year under GA, and although I had an infection after, pain wasn’t too bad.

Thank you for any replies 😊

I'm no help but I'm considering the same so knowing about recovery would be helpful.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I was back to work within 48 with no issues at all
Best thing I ever did, it gave me my life back

I didn’t even need a nurofen after. Procedure done Thursday took it easy over the weekend and back to work Monday
was fine. Bit of cramping but I couldn’t say it was ‘pain’ The worst bit was a clear discharge that didn’t smell very nice but that’s normal apparently.
I would let someone else lift and carry heavy boxes tho. - be kind to yourself for a few days

It took me a good week to feel a 100%. I was still very crampy on day four

PerfectYear321 · 01/08/2024 21:52

I was in a lot of pain the day of the procedure once the epidural wore off and nothing could touch it- not IV Paracetamol, Co-Codamol or Diclofenac. A hot water bottle gave a bit of relief.

But there was no pain from the next day and I was back to normal.

OneRealOchreHiker · 01/08/2024 22:11

I don’t remember any pain at all, just felt a bit wiped out from GA. Best thing I ever did though I found out the week before it that they had also booked me in for sterilisation at the same time which I declined as couldn’t get that much time off work at short notice in a new job.

I don’t remember any pain at all after mine. Mine did fall though. 6 months later I had a hysterectomy.

Thank you. Did you have any bloating? Have just read something about that.

I think I’ll do the sitting on the floor packing and let DP do the lifting lol

Thank you. Luckily I’m off work for the summer (work in a school).

This is what I am also worried about. Hysterectomy will be the next stage, but I’m 42 and not really wanting to go down that route yet. Not having any peri-menopause symptoms yet.

No pain but I still took it easy for 7-10 days afterwards. Discharge smell was unpleasant. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I never had another period ever again! Only downside was come menopause as I didn't have periods it was impossible to accurately figure out when I was actually in menopause. Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you! Not looking forward to the discharge smell, gotta be honest!
Really hoping my periods stop, this is absolute hell. Not being able to move from my seat as I’ll flood. Having to wear tampons, 2 pads and two pairs of knickers. Not being able to plan to do anything during my period.

Who’d be a woman, hey.

How quickly did your ablation fail? And how old were you?

Frenchsplit · 01/08/2024 23:00

I had mine as a day patient, in and out no issues at all, no GA. Why are you getting a mirena too? I got mine as that had been awful for me

GTTIA1107 · 01/08/2024 23:03

I had two weeks off work, the procedure created another issue and I had a hysterectomy two years later. I was sterilised at the same time so maybe that's why I had two weeks off but no pain after

GreenSalon2 · 01/08/2024 23:30

Had mine done under LA.

Had a day off work and no pain afterwards. Best thing I ever did!

Hi. I was 41. Knew within 8 weeks that it had failed. Dr agreed thankfully and booked a hysterectomy. He did say I would have to wait until after 6 months had passed to meet policy but he didn’t delay booking me in so I didn’t wait 6 months and then go on the surgery list.

Icequeen01 · 02/08/2024 17:13

I only had period like cramping pains for a couple of days but nothing like the pain I had before the ablation. I was older than you though, I think around 52. Consultant thought my periods probably wouldn't return but they did about 18 months later but were very light and only lasted a couple of days instead of the 8-10 days before the ablation.

It was the best thing I ever did.

SuchGreatFun · 02/08/2024 17:18

I stayed in overnight as my blood pressure kept dropping. However I was home the next morning and back to work within the week. Was definitely worth it!

Easy procedure, no pain whatsoever. A really annoying browny coloured water discharge for bloody weeks though. Felt like I was pissing myself all day every day 😂

I still have periods though, but I'm mid 30s and was told I was too young and it was recommended that I had a hysterectomy, but I ignored that and tried the ablation anyway.

I'd say 50% reduced bleeding, but 100% more pain monthly. Whatever. It's manageable.

Periods have gone from flooding a super plus tampon, plus towel, plus period pants, to being able to use a tampon alone for 4 hours. So I'm taking it as a win.

Actual operation; easy peasy.

EKGEMS · 02/08/2024 23:10

I had it under GA was the easiest surgery I've ever recovered from never needed any pain Rx I was given (I have had a LOT of surgeries before)

Adarajames · 03/08/2024 09:00

The ablation itself wasn’t too bad afterwards, some cramping but as I had horror style period pains, it was better than that!!

I did have some major pain, mostly in my shoulder after ‘the gas migrated’ according to the Dr. plus the GA made me rather unwell, but combination of the ablation and a
mirina coil was frankly a miracle in terms of no more pain and hardly anything of a period til I had menopausal systems and the last coil removed something like 25 years later.
