DD2 lost a front tooth about a month ago, but there’s no sign of the adult one coming through. How long should I wait before seeing a dentist about it?

How old is she?
Did it get wobbly and fall out naturally?

Lalalacrosse · 01/08/2024 21:01

She is 7 almost 8. it did fall out naturally (the neighbouring one is about to fall too now).

Then I’m assuming that they are top front teeth?

I had a similar thing when I was a child. The adult tooth was not there to come down. I would go to the dentist for a x ray to see what’s going on. Btw it’s perfect now after braces and a fake tooth you would never the difference!

MillyMollyMardy · 01/08/2024 21:27

Is the matching tooth to it fully through? As a guide if the tooth on the other side is through but there is no sign of this tooth within 6 months it would be worthwhile to xray to see what is going on (sometimes the teeth are crowded, or there is an extra tooth or very occasionally a missing tooth)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/08/2024 21:29

I would make an appointment with the dentist just to check there isn’t an extra tooth - if there are two waiting to come through where only one is needed, she might need to have one extracted.

We had this worry with DD, one of her top teeth came out and it had been months and still no sign of the adult one. I asked at the last appointment because I was worried there might not have been a tooth there (I didn't know that could happen!) and she said it looked like there was a tooth there but to wait a few more months. Tooth is now starting to (slowly) move into place!

SureLook · 01/08/2024 21:34

As a pp said you can take her to the dentist for an xray to see if the tooth is there. It most likely is since she has lost the baby tooth which is caused by the roots being resorbed by the adult tooth starting to erupt. Can you see or feel any bulges in the gum if you gently pull her lip up out of way? Were her baby teeth slow to come in?

Lalalacrosse · 02/08/2024 06:23

It is a top front tooth.

Her teeth have been slow to do anything (I didn’t keep track of when they first appeared but the first bottom tooth only fell out when she was already 7 and she’s far behind her classmates in terms of tooth fairy coins!

There is no sign at all of the new tooth at present - no bump or hardness.

If there’s nothing by the new dentist visit we’ll ask for an xray to check.

If the tooth next door is wobbly then it sounds like things are on track, she may just be a slightly late dental developer generally but that doesn’t mean she’ll have any problems. Wait for the other tooth to fall out , you may find that both adult teeth come down together then. Like @MillyMollyMardy said dentists will wait 6 months before taking an X-ray.

SureLook · 02/08/2024 10:38

As @Pinkypinkyplonk said, she could be late with her dental development but doesn't mean there's anything wrong, just how she is!

whensmynexthol1day · 02/08/2024 12:41

We've waited 6 months plus for a few teeth. Dentist has never been concerned. So at one month I'd just wait until the next check up and ask if it's still not through

J316 · 02/08/2024 12:45

None of my children or grandchildren got their baby teeth until after a year old. As a result they fell out later ( started around 7 years) and the adult teeth grew in when they were ready. My grandson is coming up for 11 and still has many of his baby teeth.

PleaseletitbeSpring · 02/08/2024 13:09

Was there a root on the deciduous tooth? The adult tooth coming down dissolves the root of the baby tooth. If there was no root, it means that there's a tooth in the jaw. If there's a full root, there isn't. My DD was incredibly late getting all her teeth and they were slow to erupt. I would ask for an x ray next time you visit in case it's badly positioned in the jaw.

Lalalacrosse · 02/08/2024 18:01

No root on the one that was lost, so i guess I just need to be patient.
