I'm done with the BBC. I don't watch live TV. I sometimes watch iplayer.
Can I cancel my direct debit ?

Try to think of the bigger picture. The BBC make so many fabulous programmes that appeal to niche audiences. Country file, Antiques Roadshow, local news, radio stations etc.

Once they're gone all that's left will be shite US TV that still costs at least £10 a month. If you're happy with that then go ahead, but I think it's very short-sighted and sad.

They also pay Gary Linker the equivalent of 8000 people's License Fee a year.

8000 people, chances are they're far poorer than Linekar, paying him for a few hours work and funding his £1.35 million a year pay cheque.

And that's just the salary we know about.
There's far more that they hide in production companies etc.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 01/08/2024 21:35

There are simple to understand rules about when you need a TV licence, if you don't need one then why would you be unreasonable not to have one?

You're making something straight forward unnecessarily complicated

Worldgonecrazy · 01/08/2024 21:38

Fill in the declaration. You will still get letters, just bin them. I watch anything I want to on iplayer when I visit my dad!

ShanequaAndWhat · 01/08/2024 21:41

I don't agree with the tv licence but I don't think your statement is correct or relevant. We all knew he was up to no good in November (or whenever it all came out initially) but they wouldn't be able to say much more than was said, I imagine. I also don't believe they knew. If they did, other news agencies would have and it would have been all over the news.

Complete the declaration every two years and move on. You can't watch anything live (including sky news live on your phone which irks me as bbc have fuck all to do with my phone or sky) on any channel.

GreatScruff · 01/08/2024 21:43

I cancelled mine in January although I renewed it again in July.

I filled the declaration in online and I had a letter in the post to say was I sure nd that I needed one if I watched any live tv and that was that.

howchildrenreallylearn · 01/08/2024 21:43

Just cancel if you don’t use it. It’s easy to do online and you may even get a refund. We did.

We weren’t watching bbc or iplayer so it went. Don’t know why people are saying you’ll get letters chasing you? You won’t if you cancel and don’t use it.

medianewbie · 01/08/2024 21:05

OK. I will stop watching iplayer then.
I'll just watch Netflix & other channels.
In which case I can cancel with no grief ?

Yes.

itwasntmetho · 01/08/2024 21:57

I cancelled mine when Happy Valley finished. It was the last thing worth paying for.

PoopedAndScooped · 01/08/2024 22:01

I'll stop watching live BBC. I didn't know if I could still watch recorded BBC or other channels without grief.

So you are not ‘that‘ angry then OP 🤦🏽‍♀️

Howtoeatanelephant · 01/08/2024 22:04

Sdpbody · 01/08/2024 20:50

Just cancel and ignore.

Why would you suggest breaking the law?

@PoopedAndScooped Yes, as a 55 y/o CSA survivor, who can now read about BBC support for its presenters - actively involved in CSA - from 1970's to date, I am 'that' angry. To have to pay money to this organisation is too much
As I said, I'm also aware of a lass who ended up in prison for non payment (albeit some years ago). As I've a lot on atm I'm asking on MN so I don't fuck it up. I should be able to watch non BBC TV, but maybe I can't. If so, I'll pay up so my teens have access. But it stinks.

Don't forget that their deliberately complicated payment method means that you will have paid in advance. You can claim a refund but they are 'unable' (=unwilling) to refund you if its less than 3 months remaining. Bastards. Be glad you will not be funding their grossly overpaid shenanigans any more.

Duckyfondant · 02/08/2024 12:00

I cancelled mine a few years ago and they kept the 6 months worth of advance payments they'd claimed because I couldn't prove that I wasn't watching TV anymore. Wankers.

The OP has listed her own trauma and the effect on her of working with young adult survivors of CSA. She is (correctly, in my view) dismayed and shocked by the BBCs approach to sex abusers. All completely valid points which are hardly short-sighted.

This makes me fume! The fact they take the advance payments anyway is a piss take but those comments are disgusting. It's theft. I'd watch it for 6 months longer at the very least. Complain!

If you’re watching other channels live you need one, if you’re just watching 4od or similar which isn’t live just on demand you don’t.

You can't watch iPlayer without a TV licence.

Just keep any old TV licence you have show it to the guy who knocks on your door and just tell him you still watching the same old sh#£e when you had this old licence

Startingagainandagain · 14/12/2024 09:55

I cancelled mine about 4 years ago.

The BBC became a Tory propaganda mouthpiece during Covid and BBC news completely failed to properly report on Brexit, Covid corruption/dodgy PPE contracts, Boris Johnson and so on. Not to mention all these stories of TV personalities getting away with harassing female guests and crew members.

I also refuse to pay to contribute to the salary of client journalists like Laura Kuensberg and Fiona Bruce.

I don't miss live TV or the BBC in the slightest.

All you need to do is go on their website and fill in the declaration stating that you don't watch any live TV or access the BBC iplayer.

Very well said.It seems unfortunate that what it really boils down to ,is that we live in a world where people as always want something for nothing.People happy to pay sky an extortionate amount ,but not happy to pay the BBC a nominal amount for it's news coverage ,documentaries.Radio etc.some people choose to live in the own twilight world of no news papers or no news, allegedly .Sad.I don't know why the TV companies like BBC ,itv etc don't use a subscription card service .Bearing in mind most TVs have a cam slot ,for a card /cam nowadays. Then there will be no need to chase people for subscription.Having said that there's the dodgy firestick brigade out there ,who again can watch everything for next to nothing apparently .That includes BBC channels.Always people who want something for nothing.Normally those that are last to the bar in the pub,or head for the toilet on entry, for the fear of putting their hand in their pocket.
