Antiperspirant recs for 9 year old boy?

All the gentle/natural/eco ish ones I’m seeing recommended are deodorants. He’s not stinky, he’s sweaty! Shall I just get him like a L’Oréal roll on and be done with it? Are the ‘kids deodorants’ eg Salt of the Earth just marketing, or are normal ones too harsh for kids?

I don’t want him to smell like a man yet 🥲

He’s got this rash in his arm pit, had the same in the other one a month or so ago and it’s nowhere else on his body so I’m assuming it’s a sweat thing?

Ooh, that looks quite sore so I wouldn't have him put anything on it yet.

Does he shower daily or wash his pits at least?

My son went through a stage of being quite sweaty at around 11 but fine now at 15 funnily enough. I never bought special stuff for him but got him some sanex zero for sensitive skin. But I think it was just about cleaning and drying regularly as much as anything that sorted it.

Thanks! Yes haven’t put anything on it and it was feeling better but still there this morning. He has a bath daily but think I’m gonna encourage him to have showers and take a bit more charge of his own hygiene routine. Will bear in mind Sanex Zero, thank you!

Might be worth seeing a pharmacist. That looks fungal which is common in moist areas such as under the arms

We just used bog standard antiperspirant.

MillshakePickle · 01/08/2024 16:40

Make sure he's drying himself properly after his shower/bath. Mine wasn't and had similar. Gor him to dab so liquid talc under his pits after he dried and it seemed to clear up un a couple of days

Standard roll on in fine, supermarket own brand even but get it checked out first

@KimKardashiansLostEarring - Firstly love the username

Secondly, that looks like it could irritation to something or from sweat. Did he get it after putting on a deodorant/anti-perspirant?

Encourage him to dry his armpits really well after washing. It's an easily missed area and the moisture there can cause issues and actually could result in him starting to get a little smelly.

In terms of anti-perspirant/deodorant. We use a deodorant on our boy. (9) specifically not an anti-perspirant. It's mainly to do with how they work. Stopping his body from sweating at this age might actually aggravate that issue more. Pick a nice 'drying' deodorant that has arrowroot or cornstarch or something like that in it. we use Rubb deodorant maybe give that a try.

Good luck

Hey, my name is Steph and I'm 53 yrs old. In my 30+ yrs working, I've worked hard, manual labor with a lot of sweating. 20 yrs ago, I ended up with that same rash under both armpits your son has. They would burn when I sweat and itch. But more burning. It was allergic reaction to certain deodorants. Degree was the main one. I found that the only kinds I can use are Secret and Dove. It just so happens both have a men's line.. Try buying unscented for sensitive skin. Hope this helps.

@kourtneynotkardashian @GigageWarrior thanks to you both! These rashes happened twice and actually when he had never used deodorant before but yes definitely caused by some sort of moisture (sweat or not drying properly!). it’s cleared up in its own now but thanks for advice, I’ll be keeping an eye for what triggers it for sure.
