Experian score experiences?

I've been an Experian member for a long while and dip in and out of the updates as and when needed, but for various reasons have kept a closer eye on my account over the last few months.

Twice, in that time, my score has dipped significantly, taking me from good to fair for seemingly no reason. The last time I discovered that I was in debit with my energy provider by a few pence (normal at the end of winter as I pay the same amount annually, regardless, so am always massively in credit over summer and my payments are adjusted automatically as and when needed) and I rectified that and thought that was the reason.

This time, I have dipped 90 points. No reason at all. All my bills are paid by direct debit and I always ensure there are enough funds for each bill. All my energy and water are in credit by large amounts. I have no credit cards or loans, only a mortgage, which is paid on time every month.

I am starting to think it's merely a ruse to get me to buy into their expensive detailed reports, which would show me whatever my one "negative influence" is.

Does anyone have experience with Experian and can confirm what is going on? I really resent having to buy a plan for £14pcm when all my payments seem fine.

That's exactly what it is. It's no more useful than a random number generator but I don't understand why you think you 'have' to buy it. It's entirely optional and completely meaningless.

It is useful to check your credit history in case there are any mistakes, but you can do this for free with Credit Karma or Moneysaving Expert credit club.

They make you believe you have to pay because they refuse to release any information on what the so-called negative influence is that is blighting my score. Unless you pay.

However, I may need a loan soon to buy a car as mine is falling apart and for that I need a decent credit score. I was under the impression that Experian is one of the companies regularly used to verify credit ratings? It certainly was when I was still renting.

If companies don't rely on Experian anymore then it's less of an issue.
