A thread for your stupid Olympics questions

If you have any "stupid" questions about the Olympics here's the place to ask them. Hopefully some knowledgeable people will know the answers.

At this temperature it's too hot for me to walk my dog but the horses are participating in the jumping events. Does the heat not impact them in the same way? Is it because they're bigger? Is it just because they're horses?

How did the Olympic flag make it from being up outside the Eiffel Tower to inside the stadium ?

Surely it must have been taken down at some point, so it was not flying throughout the games.

Also how did they change it so it ended up the right way up without lowering it ?

@GreenShady thats brilliant they got to go to Baku. My DD was in with a shot of Portugal but missed out this year still hoping to try again next year if her A’Levels don’t get in the way.

Ice dancing (Winter Olympics), Break dancing (one off Summer Olympics) but not Ballroom dancing.

Bugger's muddle, really.

Or even pole dancing.

I have a question!

Gymnastics, trampolining and diving.
That can't be good for your brain.
Especially diving.
We hear about rugby player footballers getting brain issues because of impact to the head
But all that spinning and with diving hitting the water.

That's got to do some long term damage?

I have a question after watching cycling yesterday - what’s with the dude on the little motorbike lining all the cyclists up like an infant teacher? Could they not form an orderly queue without him?

I don't know about the spinning but their heads don't take the force of the impact, that's what their hands are for!

Aka the keirin (?sp).

If there was no motor bike to slip stream behind initially the leading cyclist would be christmas crackered by the time the group got up to sprinting speed for the last three sprint laps.

There have been a few deaths in gymnastics after head injuries.
Rollout moves on floor have been banned as when they go wrong they're too dangerous.

The collar around the springboard for yurchenko (round off entry) vaults was a safety measure brought in after serious accidents.

I've not thought about it being a head injury/concussion prone sport, but it probably is.

In Acro gym safety is paramount and every move is built onto another, they use harnesses in pulley systems to learn throws & tumbles along with foam pits. But I have seen a few sprained and broken ankles when landings don’t go to plan.
