DS has feet that are two full shoe-sizes different - where can we buy shoes?

DS1 is nearly 17. We had his feet measured last weekend - one is 7.5 and one is 9.5!

Do we need to buy him two pairs and only use one of each? It seems like a terrible waste. Does anywhere let you buy odd shoes?

And should we be worried?

Thank you.

I'd be making a doctors appointment. If there hasn't been an error this is a marked difference, especially as it seems recent? I'm assuming you would have noticed if he'd always been like that.

Nordstrom actually offer this as a service.

Disclaimer - I've never actually used the service but a colleague I worked with had different sized feet and brought her shoes from there.

ChaChaChaChanges · 31/07/2024 21:37

He’s always had one foot a bit bigger than the other - but in the past it’s only been up to one size difference - not two,

I think the measurement was accurate, the same person did DS3’s measurement at the same time and his feet were the same size.

I'll start by saying I'm 59 now but as a child I had a size and a half difference
Clarks used to do an " Odd Shoe service" I've no idea if it still exists

Normallynumb · 31/07/2024 21:43

Quick google says they still do it

MissMoneyFairy · 31/07/2024 21:45

Look at Jo Odd Shoes, they sell different sizes

It used to 25% more expensive.

My daughter has just over one size difference. She wears the larger size with the smaller one having a large insole in. Would that work?

Crickettune · 31/07/2024 21:46

I would be taking him to see a GP or chiropractor..

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 31/07/2024 21:46

There’s a company in Devon called Chuckle shoes that custom make shoes.

Might he be having a growth spurt and one foot has grown ahead of the other? It might even out a bit by the autumn. At 17 he's undoubtedly still growing.

Thank you all who’ve replied so far.

Nordstrom do it and it shouldn't cost you extra with such a big difference.

RB68 · 31/07/2024 22:03

A friend of mine was like this when I was younger, she used to buy shoes in the sales as she had to buy two. One side of her was significantly smaller than the other and it caused all sorts of issues - something to do with being starved of oxygen at birth.

Nothing else looks lopsided…

Awe. I love that you felt the need to tell us all this.

Office shoes has an outlet site called Offcuts where they sell returned shoes / damaged shoes and also odd sized shoes - could be with a look

Defending DS1’s honour. Or something.

Yes, I think feet do grow one at a time. My dd's feet used to alternate with which one was bigger than the other. We never had to go to the extent of buying different-sized shoes for her though. When they stopped growing, they managed to both stop at the same size, thankfully.

I seem to remember when I was a child that whenever I had new school shoes with 'growing room' in, they would fit to my larger right foot. The left shoe was always far too big and they made me wear an insole in that one. I absolutely hated the feeling of it. It was a joyous day for me when I finally put my foot down (see what I did there?), refused to do it any more, and insisted on shoes half a size smaller.

A relative had to same. She purchased a normal pair but had some insert things fitted inside. This was all under gp referral. She also had one that was much narrower than the other. She had this from a young age. When her feet stopped growing one stayed at a 5 other is 8
