Civil Service role 40k

Miaowm · 31/07/2024 19:11

I am looking to work in a civil service role for around 40k mark or equally private sector but I’m
not sure what to look for. I really don’t mind what I do and don’t mind training either. Some hybrid work would be a huge huge bonus
I have an admin background but not years of experience and am good with computers. My main push is that I want to increase my salary and have progression.
Any ideas of sectors to look at or ideas for roles I could train in?

Probably a stupid question but have you looked on civil service jobs? I think for that salary you'd be looking at SEO grade which wouldn't normally be admin, it would need management experience or something sort of specialism like a technical skill or a background in Comms or policy.

£40k is far from a starting salary in the public sector. To get that you'll need significant relevent skills/qualifications/experience. The kind of jobs you can with some past admin experience and being good with computers will probably pay from £20k up to about £25k ish.

Private sector tends to pay more than public sector.

Or do you mean that pay £40k after 5-10 years experience, further training, skills development, competitive promotions and extra responsibilities? Because that (and more) is achievable in must industries if you have the ability and commitment and are prepared to put the work.

Well I’m already on a salary a fair bit more than 25k at the moment so it isn’t a huge jump. If it isn’t achievable in the civil service then I’m happy to look else where.

Yes. That’s an SEO type salary. Hard to get 40+ in CS unless you’re a specialist or work your way up.

As a generalist you could get low 30s going in as HEO if you’re very good but there’s almost a freeze at the moment so very few external applicants being taken on. They are trying to reduce everywhere so existing CS will be fighting for any HEO/SEO roles that come up.

Good luck with your job hunt.

£40k jobs anywhere generally require specialist skills, experience and qualifications.

In the field of "admin", I'd expect that to be significant experience and team leadership/management skills and qualifications. Maybe project management qualifications too. In the field of "good with computers", I'd expect that to be strong technical skills (in things such as coding/SQL/Web publishing/techical support etc) alongside significant experience in a technical role.

£40K salaries reflect the specific skills, experience and qualifications required to do the job. Look at what your manager and your manager's manager do, and the skills, qualifications and experience they have, that's the best starting point.
