As a cleaner should I be left with a 13 year old and a 16 year old whilst cleaning . Difficult as their step mum has just had her own baby and they stay here during the holidays . She just went our with baby not really saying anything . I fel awkward - or is this the norm . What if they took ill etc and I don't really know them

you’re not being left with them - they just happen to be in the house when you’re cleaning.
and yes, I would say it’s fine. Unless your contract specifies the house is empty when you’re working.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 31/07/2024 18:48

Only if she gave you the chance to agree to it or not.
13 and 16 year olds should be able to look after themselves but I’m damn sure she’d expect you to take charge if there was an accident.

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 31/07/2024 19:01

Why would they tell you if they took ill? they'd call mum or deal with it themselves.

clearmoon · 31/07/2024 19:03

I don't think it affects you, unless they get in the way while you are cleaning?

Fullyflavoured · 31/07/2024 19:05

They are old enough to be home alone. Do you expect them to go out when you go round to clean?

Sunshineafterthehail · 31/07/2024 19:06

Would you say they are bog standard dc? Cleaner here..often around with dc. Years ago I dropped a customer who had a frankly dangerous ds. He had accused at least 3 adults of SA. I wasn't taking the risk.. I had known him for a few years. His dps were always home then. Sadly they made a sharp exit when I cleaned assuming I didn't mind. I bloody did. I never explained as it was too awkward.

OlympicsFanGirl · 31/07/2024 19:07

You have no responsibility for them.

They just happen to be in the house at the same time as you are working.

As long as they don't get in your way it shouldn't matter.

purpleme12 · 31/07/2024 19:07

Well they're old enough to be left alone aren't they
So she's not expecting you to have any responsibility for them or look after them
So it's fine

I don't see how that story is relevant.

You're not being left in charge of them though, you just happen to be there cleaning whilst they are at home. It's not like she just upped and left a 3 and 6 year old which would require looking after, she left two teens home alone which is totally normal behavior.

Thanks everyone for your replies . I was just a bit shocked when my employer went out with her baby leaving her step children with me . Of course they are 13 and 16 but it is a lot different judging to leave your own children . I only clean for the morning and I would have expected her to wait until I had finished . As a mum myself I would have waited until anybody I employed in my home had gone before I left my kids in the house . It left me and them vulnerable .
