Pain and worrying results

I'm sorry, but I'm posting for traffic. Dh has pain and as a result had bloods done. The results have come back, and to our untrained eyes, look potentially very worrying. He is still in pain. Nobody at the GP practice will speak to him until his appointment in 3 weeks time. What would you do?? I think he'll go mad waiting. Where can we find some answers?

I agree those elevated results aren’t that bad- lots of potential causes that aren’t serious. They May randomly just fall back to within range.

Chickendinner24 · 01/08/2024 05:58

Thank you both! I've been awake since 4 googling and have actually just come to the same conclusion! Hopefully with some lifestyle changes he can test again and see improved results.

www.hepbpositive.org.uk/liver-function-blood-tests-explained

One test is showing inflammation of the liver which could be the result of an infection (one of a few options)
The other is showing the liver may be damaged by alcohol or paracetamol use and can be resolved

Is your DP a moderate or heavy drinker?

Also the pain may be completely unrelated to the liver function results

Did the bloods show any signs of infection or inflammation

What is his diet like? Is he overweight? Non alcholic fatty liver is becoming really common due to too much sugar and can cause pain in the top right of the tummy.

I need to get him to show me everything. He was a big binge drinker in his teens and 20s and has probably always drank too much, but not in the past 5 years, apart from the odd drunken night out. He's also put on weight and has a very stressful job. I think he's scared as he feels it's self inflicted and he knows he's not been looking after himself. He's early 40s now.

He may just have a fatty liver or inflamed gallbladder, OP. Those results don't indicate cancer necessarily. I would see the private GP to review and get any necessary referrals.

Chickendinner24 · 01/08/2024 06:38

Thanks. Would you pay for the private GP? It's about £130. Worth not waiting a few weeks?? We are not wealthy, but could put it on a credit card.

Would it be wise to book in with a private GP? I've never done that before. An online consultatation is £50 and a face to face is £130.

If there was an urgent issue, you would have an apot before 3 weeks

@BirdInDisguise well it could be liver failure or cancer, yes. Especially worrying as he is in a lot of pain in that area.

They would have him in quicker than soft mick it cancer was suspected. You should take a breath

lillyg34 · 01/08/2024 07:18

These results don't look overly concerning. Obviously I'm not a doctor but my ALT has been similar this year and no cause was found after multiple tests. They said they are more concerned when in the thousands. If it was super urgent you would be in a lot sooner.

You aren't listening are you?
Do the private gp thing. You have already made up your mind anyway

That was unnecessarily rude. OP those results are not immediately concerning, 3 weeks should be fine. The GP surgery have presumably seen the results and would get you in sooner if they were concerned. Your DH should probably avoid alcohol and paracetamol in the meantime.

Chickendinner24 · 01/08/2024 08:10

@Howtoeatanelephant ffs. Look, this isn't me, is it? If it was then I would make the appointment probably, but this is for another adult who is resistant to the private GP. I'm here trying to weigh up the seriousness of the results. Other posters have said these levels are not alarming necessarily. We have ordered a private blood test to check the levels a week on. We will probably take further action depending on what they say.

The results could have just been snapshot in time- dh had been abroad eating crap and drinking large volumes of alcohol...

I apologise, @Chickendinner24 .

The British Liver Trust has a helpline. Details here. You could try them for help before the GP appointment.

I second this. It is a nurse led helpline and I've had very good information from them regarding end stage liver disease on more than one occasion.

Chickendinner24 · 01/08/2024 17:21

@LordFarquart38 thanks to the other poster who recommended them, I rang them today and they were absolutely brilliant. What a difference a 5 minute conversation can have! Feeling much more positive now. Thanks everyone for taking the time to post.

Me again! Dh has just had his ultrasound, and although no results back, the sonographer couldn't see anything dodgy, no stones etc as we are now thinking his pain might be more gallbladder than liver.

He has cut out alcohol and is mainly clean eating and his liver results have come down.

What next to investigate this pain??
