Does anyone here drink Reisling wine?

I went off white wine about a year ago, I used to drink Sav blanc or Chenin blanc. I can't bear those now, they just taste too "heavy" is the only way I can describe it. I've been drinking rose but getting a bit bored of it now.
Anyway someone have suggested Reisling as it sounds like what I'm looking for, i.e light, refreshing, easy drinking, is that right? Any recommendations?

Oh my mum used to drink Riesling in the 1990s! I don't think it was a good wine then either.

Riesling bought in a UK supermarket in the 90s was probably terrible. The Germans understandably kept the good stuff at home.

But Riesling is so flexible it can be almost any style of white and at multiple price (and quality) points.

I'll add another couple of grape varieties that may please you,@MissyB1.

From NW Spain, the albarino grape is dry and light, it becomes alvarinho in Portugal. Also godello, treixadura and lourejo from the same region, which move towards Chardonnay. And as a PP said earlier, a nice unoaked Chardonnay can be delicious.

Go to Italy, and try pecorino, passerina and fiano wines. Sicily is a particularly strong source of interesting white wines, at sensible prices.

I also like Viognier (mainly French but also grown in Latin America and Oz) but this is "fatter" and oilier. And there are far more lesser known regional than I can list. Central Europe is worth contemplating, and even Greece.

We are not long back from Greece and I was very pleasantly surprised by how good their wines were. I’ve never had a Spanish wine. I think I need to go to a wine tasting event 😂

Have you got a branch of Majestic near you? They are always super-helpful, and if you tell them what you are after will makes lots of suggestions, give you tasters etc.

I like Gruner Veltliner and Picpoul de Pinet as nice alternatives to Sauvignon Blanc, which I find too acidic. For everyday easy drinking there's also good old Pinot Grigio.

Yes we have majestic, that's a good idea I could pop in and ask for advice.

I used to drink Riesling occasionally years ago, but it is a bit on the sweet side for me. I wouldn't call it light and refreshing though.

@MissyB1 Have you tried Pinot Grigio? Chilean or NZ white wines might be worth a go too, they tend to be a bit less heavy than others.

Devonchills · 31/07/2024 16:07

I second a Picpoul de Pinet. It's a wonderfully light and refreshing white wine.

Its not my cuppa but I do love a white Rioja

I've just discovered white Rioja, esp Cune, and it is now my favourite. Also partial to Viognier, Gavi, Chenin blanc and Chardonnay. I prefer my whites to be a bit fuller and not too acidic as they tend to give me heartburn, but I do like New Zealand Sauvignon blanc.

I'm open to trying a good Riesling though, so will look into those mentioned.

I'm.going to have to try a Voignier it seems to be very popular.
