Flucloxacillin - does this sound like a reaction to them?

DS has been given Flucloxacillin for an infected cut on his toe. 4 times a day for 5 days.

Took 3 yesterday with food and didnt space out enough I told him must be taken on an empty stomach and longer intervals. He's done that today and had 3 today. Felt absolutely fine.

Tonight he was out and threw up, felt ill. He decided to come home but he's had to pull over as he felt faint and thrown up again.

Im wondering if it's a reaction to Flucloxacillin but Im sure he had them before

His friends just picked him up and taking him to hers ... we are too far away and dont think he can withstand the journey.

Get him to ring the non emergency NHS number for advice

Lesleyknopeswaffleiron · 30/07/2024 23:12

Hey @CornishTeaTime i had a similar reaction to them - mine was diarrhoea too. Highly unpleasant. But PP is right - no-one can diagnose what’s wrong except a medical professional, so suggest you seek help

I can't take Flucloxacillin as it gave me really really bad diarrhoea. It started on day 2 or 3. I would ring doctors in morning and swap for something else. I was prescribed it recently for an infection and I refused it! They gave me something else instead

CornishTeaTime · 30/07/2024 23:17

Not had diarrhea .... I did read that was a side effect too.

Check the cut on his toe to see if the infected area has spread. If so he may need seen urgently for IV antibiotics .

Ariela · 30/07/2024 23:23

The infected cut - can you see the infected area? Has it increased? Draw a line round it.
If he continues to vomit and the infected (red) area is still increasing, this can potentially rapidly turn to sepsis - he'll vomit again and be unable to even keep water down, let alone the next tablet (BTDT and got the tshirt).
It's good he's rung 111 for advice.

CornishTeaTime · 30/07/2024 23:42

So update,hr's at his friends, no bad swelling on cut area but Ive told him to draw around it. He said it has gone down if anything. Feels bit better and not as sick anymore. Im getting him tomorrow and will call Drs get him a different AB

Why are you calling the doctors for him @CornishTeaTime? just out of interest

CornishTeaTime · 30/07/2024 23:59

Because he's in the rural middle of nowhere/countryside poor signal. You need to call the surgery at 7.59am and get in the queue of callers, on Monday he was no. 30!!! His mobile will prob cut out. That answer ok for you @Lesleyknopeswaffleiron - did you have any advice other than your question?

Hey @CornishTeaTime - I did give advice, upthread.

Your update didn’t have that context in. My point was going to be that your husband should call himself because often they want to speak directly to the patient. I didn’t want to suggest that without checking if there was a reason you would call on his behalf.

There was no intended snark OP and I think you’ve bitten my head off here.

i hope your husband gets better soon

IAmTheSockThief · 31/07/2024 00:10

It sounds like it could be. I get an alternative as it makes the skin on my face burn and peel 😬 hopefully they will give him something else.

Oddly enough, I've had it via IV and the nurses were on standby for a serious reaction. I was fine so it was obv something else in the tablet rather than the drug itself that I'm allergic to.

CornishTeaTime · 31/07/2024 07:58

@Lesleyknopeswaffleiron ah yes apologises you did reply further up and didnt mean to be snappy just worried as I couldnt get to him until today and some MNetters are just so judgy!

UPDATE
GP has told him to keep taking them as he has had them before and was ok on them. Said after a couple if he feels bad again to stop them and call surgery!
