I saw a helicopter going over today and looked it up to find it was owned by the national grid. Really puzzled me why they would need one?

I don’t know - but this is an interesting discovery !

Bathymamouth · 30/07/2024 20:07

They do helicopter surveys of the pylons lines

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 30/07/2024 20:07

They use the helicopters to scan the lines, track faults and even repair them.

Bathymamouth · 30/07/2024 20:07

I've seen it happen along my local pylons.

FattipuffToThinnifer · 30/07/2024 20:08

Presumably to inspect their lines and pylons (and wayleaves)? I think they don’t use drones because of the risk of them dropping and causing damage!

Hteng · 30/07/2024 20:09

As said above they fly the power lines on a schedule, the big pylons out way get flown every Monday, smaller lines less often.

Could be the Chief Executive being taken home?

ScampiandChip · 30/07/2024 20:13

I knew there would be someone here who knew. With the nice weather there have been lots of interesting smaller planes overhead recently.

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 20:40

ScampiandChip · 31/07/2024 08:39

Yup, lovely weather means more light aircraft. My daughter is half way through her pilots licence and is very restricted by the weather under the terms of what she is allowed to do/fly through. Sunny, not windy = private pilots galore!

i saw that one as well, I often check the app to check a plane or chopper the only trouble is a lot don’t show up or arnt sending out a signal
