I bought smoked salmon for lunch tomorrow as it was on offer. Date is 30th which I thought was tomorrow, but have just realised is actually today. I have
leftovers which should be eaten today (meat cooked on Friday). Would you eat it on the 31st?

Absolutely. Mild sniff on the way through just in case.

HurdyGurdy19 · 30/07/2024 15:43

I'd eat that next week!!!

persisted · 30/07/2024 15:43

I would.

Yep

ElleneAsanto · 30/07/2024 15:50

I’d be happy to eat it at least until next Tuesday, or longer. (Assuming it’s vacuum packed and sealed.) Smoking is what you do to preserve food.

Normallynumb · 30/07/2024 15:51

I would happily eat that

Peonies12 · 30/07/2024 15:57

I'd eat it for another week, unless was visibly off. You know those dates are entirely random, and a total scam to encourage waste. Can't believe anyone pays attention to them.

muddyford · 30/07/2024 16:24

I would but you could always put it in the deep freeze for later consumption.

“If it’s not mouldy and it doesn’t smell bad, it’s fine” is my motto for food.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/07/2024 16:32

Yes I would eat smoked salmon when it is a day out of date, but I would not eat out of date fresh salmon. (Although actually I wouldn't eat either because I don't like salmon)

I wouldn't eat out of date 'fresh' meat or fish, or beansprouts. I would eat cured meat or fish, cheese or yoghurt if they were out of date, provided they looked and smelt OK.

Anything else (veg, bread, fruit, milk) depends on what it looks and smells like. Slimy, brown, mouldy, rancid - any of those I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole even if it was still in date.

MumChp · 30/07/2024 16:39

Smoked, yes.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 30/07/2024 16:44

As long as it smells ok then yes.....stuff doesn't automatically go off at the stroke of midnight.

AdaColeman · 30/07/2024 16:53

Yes, I'd eat it. I'd eat smoked salmon for 3 or 4 days after it's use by date had expired.

MillyCentTap · 30/07/2024 17:12

You could cook it if you're worried. A minute or two in a hot frying pan, nice with a poached or fried egg.

GapsGalore · 31/07/2024 10:38

That's usually my attitude too, but wondered if I need to be more careful with fish. We'll be eating it unless DS tells DH!

.....in which case you can eat it all, and they'll just have to have boiled eggs!
