French booing..

Marylou62 · 30/07/2024 10:29

WatchTim Pidcocks amazing win in Paris and watching his voice breaking with upset over the booing got me thinking..

If there's a French equivalent of Mumsnet have french people spoken out and condemned this? Any french people here who have seen any condemnation of this?

Actually I thought he was tearful with the emotion of his amazing win, although he noted the booing.

It doesn’t seem very French to boo, not sure what’s going on there.

blossomismyfriend · 30/07/2024 11:03

They seem determined to offend as many people as possible. Well done France 👏

Yeah, it was this.

It looked initially like he had pulled a dodgy move on the other guy, but the UCI ruled that he didn't, and replays show that he kept his line.

He is an incredible athlete. Also straight-talking. Ought to be a contender for SPOTY every year, but never seems to be. By the way, he's a mere 5ft 2.

I'm boycotting the Olympics (several reasons - paedophile rapist competing, men punching women now a recognised sport, Russia banned but not Israel), so have not seen any of it. I hear that Steven Van De Velde was booed, which I thoroughly approve of. It seems Tim Pidcocks was booed because home fans disapproved of the winning move he made on France's Victor Koretzky. Very unsporting of them.

Aaron95 · 30/07/2024 11:12

He beat a French rider after they collided on the final lap. The collision was allowed but some will differ in that opinion. Given that the other guy was French, it's hardly surprising some of the crowd booed.

follier · 30/07/2024 11:13

Also, he would have won by a long stretch, had he not punctured (with his mechanic not ready to fix) and lost 40 seconds.

Oh just like other nationalities the French will boo, it used to be quite entertaining to be roadside at the Tour d F when a hate figure (e.g. Lance Armstrong) rode past.

As for yesterday some idiots in the crowd incorrectly thought that Pidock’s overtaking move on the run in was questionable.

Most saw it as a legit racing move and the French guy who ended up with silver said as much on French TV plus added he was Christmas crackered and couldn’t have held Pidock off anyway.

The booing was a shame but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it from other nationalities..🤐

Watch the French Open, the French love to boo as much as anyone!

Radiatorvalves · 30/07/2024 11:28

I was at the Serbia v Puerto Rico women’s basketball. There was booing but only after a nasty foul by Serbia. At the women’s tennis plenty of support for both players (US and Ukraine) and an excellent match. No booing at all. Same for Alcaraz match. He was clearly the favourite but his Dutch opponent played brilliantly.

Actually TP was in front and kept his line. The French rider collided with him and acknowledged TP was not at fault. No debate at all for anyone who knows the rules.

I know that but it's quite normal for fans to cheer or boo winners/losers after controversial decisions.

Lonelycrab · 30/07/2024 11:40

It was an audacious move for sure but all the comment I’ve read on it (I’m very much into mtb) has said it was within the rules; it wasn’t intentional contact and at the point of impact Pidcock was infront of the French rider. It wasn’t contested either.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/07/2024 11:40

I hope they bring their boos out loud and clear for the Dutch rapist and the men beating up women in the boxing ring.

Topseyt123 · 30/07/2024 11:41

He wasn't in tears at the booing. He was emotional at his fantastic win. He had been up against it and it wasn't a done deal until the very end. It was on a knife edge until very near the end.

Do you think the British never boo?

I'm not boycotting the Olympics. Fuck that! I love it and people have worked so hard for years for their moment. There are always controversies. I didn't watch the men's beach volleyball but I've watched almost everything else and it is mostly great fun.

It was within the rules and Tom Pidcock was not at fault. The French competitor even acknowledged that.

There was no violation. It was fair and square and very exciting. I loved it.

They have.

As they have done during the football match with Israel.

That is THE SPECTATORS have.
What citizenship those people have, I’m not quite sure. It’s the Olympics after all. I doubt they are all French. Not even sure if they are mainly French either.

And if it had been the other way around, you’d be sure British fans would have booed too!

Of course they would have. People talk as though the British never boo. They do. A fair bit.

25percent · 30/07/2024 12:33

I thought this was very poor behaviour from the French especially after such an amazing race. I am not supporting the French in any events from now on (because my armchair support makes all the difference you know!)

Oh ok... it's just I've never heard any booing in the Olympics...
My question was has anyone french condemned the booing?

S'cultural innit. People complained during the Rugby World Cup too, but it's just how the crowd express displeasure in French sport.

It's of the moment and doesn't mean they're unsporting - I've sat beside French supporters at big events who'll be very vocal expressing what they think at the time, but they'll be the first to turn around and congratulate you if your team wins.

Yes of course they have:

Terrible pour le Français, mais quelle course de zinziiiiins ! Ridicule de huer Pidcock qui a été absolument énorme, magnifique champion olympique », ajoute un autre. « Pidcock qui se fait huer et siffler alors qu’il faut juste reconnaître qu’il a géré. C’est beau l’esprit du sport, c’est beau le public français… Applaudir le vainqueur et notre français Koretzky qui arrive 2e c’est trop vous demander ? »,”

I never heard anyone boo at Wimbledon.l, so maybe it is more of a French thing.
