Heathers the Movie

DD is almost 11. She's DC3 and has two older brothers so pretty mature.
She loves musicals and has seen Hamilton and Six. She's expressed an interest in Heathers the Musical - I vaguely remember the movie from the 80's.
The website advises 14+ due to references to sexual violence, murder and suicide. It's not a good idea to take her is it?

Are you fine with a 10 year old listening to “fuck me gently with a chainsaw” and lots of dead gay son suicide gags? 14+ is there for good reason!

weebarra · 29/07/2024 21:30

Um, no.
That's a wee bit different to stuff like Our Flag Means Death and Inside Number Nine which she had watched!

I've seen the musical. There's a lot of sex in it, and I don't think they use the chainsaw line. And in fact the gay footballers stuff is all very celebratory and Pride like. It's a lot tamer than the film.

Mybestusername · 29/07/2024 21:46

I wouldn't. There's a lot of swearing and graphic language, simulated sex and sexual violence, as well as eating disorders, murders and suicides. Go and see Wicked instead.

Though the singing is completely awesome, apparently one of the most technically difficult and harsh on the singers.
It's probably best to wait a while.
When they're 14 plus will be properly edgy and speak to their inner teenager, and hopefully stop them murdering people.

Vermin · 29/07/2024 22:20

The chainsaw line is most definitely in there!

They have done a pro shot which you could watch first. I think it's on Amazon. But no I wouldn't take an 11 year old myself.

CarrotShake · 29/07/2024 23:36

It’s on Amazon prime OP, maybe give that a watch first!

it’s pretty mild, but tbh I think it’s the kind of thing you’d want to judge yourself as a parent.

TippledPink · 29/07/2024 23:39

I took my behaves much older 13.5 year old recently, wouldn't take any younger tbh, was a bit much in places!

AutismTimesTwo · 30/07/2024 00:30

Have seen it 3 times with my now 16 year old. No way would I have wanted her to see it at nearly 11 for the above reasons. I'm no prude but I don't think it is pretty mild.

Guys and Dolls is brilliant if she hasn't seen it.

I haven't seen Mean Girls yet, but intend to with my younger DC, age rating is 10+

Bullying a very fat girl, which Veronica helps with, albeit reluctantly, to the point that the fat girl ends up disabled or very badly injured from a failed suicide attempt.

Luring two boys to be murdered. Even though Veronica thought they were going to be tranquilized, she couldn’t help bursting out laughing at their funeral. Setting them up as “fags” to increase the humiliation.

Numerous sex references, some of them quite graphic.

Main plot is killing everyone in the school.

I wouldn’t show this to an 11-year-old, personally. It’s a very slow film, so she’s probably going to find it rather boring anyway.

Needmorelego · 30/07/2024 01:28

The stage musical is absolutely brilliant.
But definitely NOT for an almost 11 year old.
The film was originally an 18 certificate (I think it's a 15 now).
